Re: The Wire: The GOAT Show Discussion Thread

Agreed on The Wire not having a lead like Breaking Bad did. I know people like to point to McNulty as the lead but he really wasn't. There were characters more major than others but the show wasn't about one individual, it was about the game and the life.

For me it's the greatest. I haven't seen The Sopranos yet though but I think as highly of as The Wire then I'll be amazed. Not because I don't expect it to be but because I hold The Wire in such high regard. It's pretty comfortably better than Breaking Bad imo but I'm not going to argue against someone who feels otherwise. I don't know about it being subjectively better but I think it's better personally along with enjoying it more. Walter White is probably a better individual characters than anyone on The Wire but there's probably about 5-10 characters on The Wire who were better characters than anyone else on Breaking Bad and the scope of the stories within The Wire was much deeper. Breaking Bad was about one guy's story and other characters that the story brought in. The Wire wasn't one man's story.

Re: The Wire: The GOAT Show Discussion Thread

you'll watch The Sopranos and decide thats better (esp when you get around season 3 - 5), then you'll rewatch The Wire and decide no, thats better, then you'll rewatch sopranos and....... on and on until you realize its pointless and theyre both glorious in their own way.

2 very different shows though, Sopranos has more devices like psychiatry sessions, dream sequences and literature/film references to explore subtexts of its characters (and not just Tony). The Wire's got just as much subtext and drama but has to be a little more deft and realistic about using them.

Re: The Wire: The GOAT Show Discussion Thread

Like I said in another thread, Breaking Bad was a character study, The Wire was a society (city) study, and now I'd like to add The Sopranos was a family + character study. That's where many people fuck up with Sopranos, thinking it's a mafia show ala Goodfellas, Godfather, etc, when it's not, it's a show about family (or families, if you like). It's about mothers and sons (early seasons), fathers and sons (later seasons), spouses, brothers and sisters, cousins, real and fake friends... But again, it's displayed through totally unique and subtle things.

Absolutely nothing tops The Sopranos.

Re: The Wire: The GOAT Show Discussion Thread

Sopranos for me is the most complex TV show ever made and probably will never be topped in that regard. It's characters are so subtly multi layered and conflicted. It really isn't just about gangsters, in the same way The Wire isn't just a cop show.

Sopranos characters are more complicated because they are able to use all kinds of tools to show their development unlike The Wire which is much more grounded in reality and so it's characters are developed through every day goings on. Not that they aren't in Sopranos too, but they delve so far into the minds of characters like Hanoi said through dreams, therapy and almost fantasy like elements as well as religious and mythological aspects all while its still got it's feet firmly grounded in reality too. Tony is the greatest character ever, but it isn't just about him. Like Chismo said, its a full on epic about families, generations and life and death. That's why I prefer Sopranos, The Wire is a different beast though and I'm not going to say anyone who says it's the greatest is wrong. Both shows are the absolute pinnacle of television and full blown masterpieces, not just of television but art in general.

Re: The Wire: The GOAT Show Discussion Thread

Sopranos is good, but it has more weak seasons then even the wire in my mind. First part of Season 6 was bad, didnt like Season 4 either. Breaking Bad did have a better lead, but the lead character in The wire is the city of Baltimore. The cast of characters in The Wire shits on the cast of characters in Breaking Bad.

and lets not turn this into a breaking bad vs. the wire thread. if you wanna suck breaking bads dick, go to their thread. i love the show too, but this is THE WIRE thread.

Anyways, Season 5 was alright. Not amazing like 3 and 4, but 5 does its job. The Marlo/Omar war was AMAZING and the fact that at the end of the day, Omar won, pure brilliance.

Re: The Wire: The GOAT Show Discussion Thread

fucking comparison bullshit. (I'm on season 4 of sopranos atm, i'd not put it on par with the wire yet, but it's very good + tony soprano fucking owns)

season 2 tends to be "underrated" by a lot, or they find it hard to get into due to the shift and the introduction of a bunch of new characters and it can be hard to settle but I found it awesome. also valchek's a prick.
