Re: 5 Movies To Watch On Halloween

My friends and I have had an annual Halloween movie day & night every year for the last 4 or 5 years.

Here are the rules for lists we usually make up.

We need:

1 Comedy = Ghostbusters, Young Frankenstein, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Shaun of the Dead, or Zombieland. Those are usually the ones that get brought up.

1 Animated OR 1 Dumb Kids Movie we watched in our Youth = Nightmare Before Christmas, Disney's Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Night on Bald Mountain from Fantasia, Paranorman, etc. For the Dumb Kids Movies, the picks are usually Ernest Scared Stupid or Hocus Pocus.

1 Slasher Flick or 1 Killer Alien Flick = Nightmare on Elm Street, Psycho, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Hellraiser, Child's Play, etc. And of course the franchises immense number of sequels are applicable. And since alot of Alien horror films are similar to slasher films, we decided to count them here, so Alien, Aliens, Predator, & The Thing usually come up in discussion too.

1 Old School Monster Classic (Must be in Black & White & Pre 1950s) = Nosferatu or the Universal Monster Classics. That's usually what we stick with.

1 Giant Monster Movie: I fight for Godzilla every year, naturally, but King Kong, THEM!, The Beast of 20,000 Fathoms, Rodan, War of the Gargantuas, Cloverfield, & Jurassic Park have also come up. I wouldn't be surprised if Pacific Rim was this year's movie.

1 Haunted House or Possession Story: The Exorcist & The Shining are the top two for this. Paranormal Activity also came up one year. I might recommend the original version of The Haunting since I don't think my friends have seen it.

and finally 1 Zombie Flick = Night of the Living Dead, Its Remake, Dawn of the Dead, Its Remake, Day of the Dead, Return of the Living Dead. We pretty much just stick with those.

Good way of breaking it down and I definitely agree with those choices.

If I had to break it down like that, I'd probably do:

Comedy - Young Frankenstein, Shaun of the Dead, or Return of the Living Dead

Animated - A Nightmare Before Christmas

Kids - Ernest Scared Stupid, Little Monsters, or Monster Squad

Old School Monster - Not so old school but I'd go with Silver Bullet

Giant Monster - I'd go with The Mist or The Blog remake

Haunted House - 13 Ghosts (I actually dug that movie a lot)

Zombie - Since I already said ROTLD, I'd go with Night of the Living Dead or 28 Days Later.

What I'm watching this Halloween...

Nosferatu (both versions)

The Innocents
The Unknown

In terms of what I'd recommend for people to watch, my favourite horror movies...

Halloween (duh)
Freaks
Romero Zombie trilogy
The Shinning
Rosemary's Baby
The Vanishing
Sleep Tight
Psycho
Repulsion
The Exorcist
The Thing
Alien
Paranormal Activity
Bram Stokers Dracula

There's more but those are the first to pop up in the old noggin.

Re: 5 Movies To Watch On Halloween

if you're gonna watch Halloween II it makes much more sense to watch the first one right before it since it picks up the same night. Also you should then watch Halloween IV and V because they are better than most of the stuff on these lists.

Also Rob Zombie's Halloween was a very good remake and featured a grown up Danielle Harris. The sequel was pretty poor, however.
