Default Guillermo Del Toro adapting acclaimed anime, Monster, for HBO

Guillermo Del Toro is teaming-up with Sherlock and Doctor Who writer Steven Thompson to develop Naoki Urasawa's Monster as a television series for HBO, Deadline reports. The 18-volume manga series has been adapted previously as anime, and is described as, “a thriller about the worldwide search by a young doctor for the most evil sociopath that has ever lived. He is a 12-year-old boy, and the doctor’s decision to save his life has unwittingly unleashed a Pandora’s Box that leaves the doc battling to stop a plot of mass genocide.”

Thompson will write the screenplay for the pilot with Del Toro set to direct. The pair will also co-executive produce alongside Angry Films’ Don Murphy and Susan Montford and Exile’s Gary Ungar. Shogakukan, the Japanese publisher of the manga volumes, will act as a consulting producer.

Anime and manga fans know how amazing Monster is. Hopefully GDT and HBO can do it justice. If the show is half as good as the anime, it'll be amazing.

Interesting premise, and the fact that it's been picked up by HBO gives this a bit of credibility. This coming from someone who's completely oblivious to the aforementioned anime.

Still crossing my fingers that Guillermo Del Toro remakes the 1983 movie adaptation of F. Paul Wilson's "The Keep.". It's a project that's destined for him. c'mon Guil..

I can't wait to watch this, I just finished Monster a few weeks ago, and I kept wondering how New Line would condense this epic, long ass story into a movie. This is definitely the way to go in my opinion. Although I must say I wouldn't mind if they tweaked the ending a bit as I thought it was rather anti-climactic.

Don't know of the original anime but GDT teaming up with HBO is great, and the premise sounds pretty awesome.
