Re: WF Book Club - Currently Reading The Casual Vacancy
I'm about halfway done with it now, and I am definitely liking it more than I did the first time I picked it up. I think maybe the problem was I prejudged it too harshly. I mean, the HP series was fantastic, young adult series notwithstanding. I believe that I, like other people, took a more critical eye towards this book as a result. One thing to keep in mind is that she is still a novice author, who has yet to prove her writing "chops" over the long haul. For example, it is akin to judging an athlete who hits two home runs or scores a hat trick in his first professional game at the top level. Sometimes people just get lucky. Then again this book could be a hiccup in the road to better books in the future by Rowling.
To me, it seems most of the folks in this little town are quite petty and rather more self motivated than I would ever expect adults to behave. Then again I have probably lived a very sheltered life, so, whatever. I personally find the voracious hunger towards gossip to be a little disconcerting. Do people actually think and behave like that? I thought it was only on TV...
