I'm not a huge fan of JK Rowling's writing style although the world of Harry Potter was a great creation and the first four books in the series (especially the third) kick ass so I'll be happy to give this a read so long as I can get hold of it.

I bought this for my sister at Christmas, and she loved it. I'll have to borrow it back!

I just downloaded the book.

I'll admit to not being a JK Rowling fan but a friend recommended "The Casual Vacancy", which I'd been putting off reading, so now I've got no excuse not to give it a go.

So has anyone read this book yet? If so, what would you rate the book from a scale of 1 to 10? I downloaded the book and it will might take me a month to read.

I'm up to date with my "Skulduggery Pleasant" series. "Maleficent Seven" only took me a day to read, but I have to finish "Love in the Time of Cholera" for the second time and grasp a better understanding of it.

Not the biggest fan of JK, but I'll give The Casual Vacancy a whirl. Will try and find a place to download it just now, unless someone wants to send me a link or something.

EDIT: Got a link sent to me, thanks GB.

I tried to read this book a while ago. I ended up putting it down after about 60 pages or so. I think I felt like I didn't understand a lot of what was going on. I probably didn't give the book enough of a chance. I'm looking forward to trying it again.

I'm down, whether or not it's good. God knows I read plenty of crap mixed in with the good stuff anyways, so either way I'm good.

So how many responses did we get? Like are people actually seeming to be down with this?

I am, but I have to read in spurts when I have the time, so while I downloaded the book a couple of days ago I've only read the first chapters thus far and likely won't get back to it until mid-week.

Seems like quite a few are willing - it's seeing how many will follow through that's generally a good indicator.

I'm about 10% through.

I'll spoiler my thoughts so far, although they're mostly "general" thoughts.

Spoiler for :
It's "okay". It seems a little dull so far - I like the idea behind the first chapter, various peoples reactions to the death. It's just not particularly gripping so far. I also find some of her language jarring at times - the cursing I mean. Maybe it's because I'm mentally thinking of Harry Potter or, whatever. It just feels like she's trying to show very hard THIS IS AN ADULT BOOK - SWEAR WORDS SWEAR WORDS some of the time. The various POV's in the first chapter were fine, it's a good idea, especially with the sort of first person type style she writes but a lot of it was quite dull. I mean the over the top glee at his death doesn't actually strike as as unusual and I do think she captures the way a small community would react to a death as quite accurate and it's probably the thing I like most so far.

I've no idea where it's going, other than towards a new member of the council. So yeah, I guess that'll be the "general plot". Her writing isn't bad, it's fairly standard - some of her prose I found a little jarring but it's certainly very readable to me.

Anyway that was just vague first impressions, I'll read on.
