Re: Game of Thrones: Season 3. TV Series Discussion. NO BOOK SPOILERS...NONE
Viserys was a truly tragic character though. If Viserys' life and the circumstances of it were different, he would grow up to be a great guy, I believe. I always had the impression that he was a good person before everything on his life collapsed. His whole family was killed, and only him and his younger sister managed to survive. They fled to Essos and Viserys was the one that had to take care of everything. Himself, his sister, assure their survival and always evade Robert's attempts to kill them both. All of this when he should be the one on the Iron Throne but couldn't, and people mocked him for it. Everything was on his shoulders, and he was still pretty young. I can only imagine his frustration, which eventually turned him into the person we saw. It was a hard life.
And even though Viserys became a lunatic, completely insane, and treated Daenerys in a terrible way (he used to treat her well), in my opinion he still didn't deserve to die. Daenerys, as his sister, should try to help him even more because he was clearly sick in the head. She was his sister, if it wasn't for him she wouldn't even be alive. He was family, after all. I still believe her not doing anything when Drogo (I totally believe Drogo would not kill him if Dany pleaded with him) was ready to kill him will come back to haunt her someday.
Viserys gets my full sympathy.

"So many vows...they make you swear and swear. Defend the king. Obey the king. Keep his secrets. Do his bidding. Your life for his. But obey your father. Love your sister. Protect the innocent. Defend the weak. Respect the gods. Obey the laws. It's too much. No matter what you do, you're forsaking one vow or the other.”
