Robb slowly turning his own army against him
the jaime kingslayer why he killed the mad king stuff
jaime lost his hand.
theon getting tortured
introducing all the wildlings
berec vs the hound
karstark beheading

bran learning about warging (this was boring scenes mainly but nessacary)
joffery going more batshit crazy every week
margery and the tyrells plotting stuff to try to take power from under the lannisters making the people of KL love her.

Jons loyalty to NW.
Sam tarley stuff.
Crasters Keep and the NW turning on Joer.

and thats without even mentioning davros/Arya/Tywin/Tyrion/varys/Sansa/Baelysh/rest brother without banners stuff

there isnt much they could have left out from what they chose. some parts of a 7 novel series of books are going to run slow to build up characters. Thats just how novels work. So many characters needing air time so little time to fill it in.

There are obviously some scenes that werent needed. The flaming arrow missing the boat 3 times then someone else shooting it for a characther who hadnt even been on screen before was pretty needless

All of these are small events. Only game changer was RW, but that not really since I already could see that Tywin is gonna own Robb. So instead of him being just defeated this season, he is killed. Other than that, nothing really of any consequence happened.
I'm scared because I read that later books are even more slow and boring than this one.

I don’t get this at all. No more than the others seasons.

For a start, they’re clearly building towards something, I’m assuming there’s that battle Stannis seen in the flames. The RW was a HUGE event, every bit as big as Ned’s beheading, Blackwater, anything. It’s probably the defining moment of the series thus far. On top of that. Jaime lost his hand, Theon lost his manhood – They’re pretty much “game changer”s involving the main characters of the show. We’ve had new characters introduced very effectively, the likes of Ramsay and The Brotherhood and seen other characters developed superbly – Jamie, Bolton and Walder Frey in particular.

To me it was an absolutely brilliant season even if the ending was comparatively weak. My main gripe would be the lack of progress with White Walkers but that’s simply because of last years cliff hanger implying that shit was about to go down, and in fact very little shit has gone down.

I think Blackwater spoiled a few people's expectations to be honest.

To be fair, the Walkers pretty much never show up in the books either.

I think the last episode was one of the weakest of the season. The only bits that stood out to me were Arya & the Hound butchering Frey soldiers, The Small Council scene & Davos being hilarious. The scene with Daenerys was just cringe worthy and was just so out of place with the whole show. I can kind of understand them wanting to end on a cheery note after the RW episode but it just didn't build any suspense for the next season like the White walkers did or the Dragons. I think if it ended with the RW episode it would of been much better.

Oh well, only a year to wait and already halfway through the first book after 2 days.

I'm just a viewer. I'm not an acting expert. ;-)

All I can say it, how a character comes across to me. With Shae it's:
- She has an interesting face, which imo fits the role well
- Her way of portraying distance, suppressed anger and need for love convinces me => good
- But I don't feel her connection with Tyrion, nor a soft side => bad

For me her character hasn't created much sympathy, nor much profile. Parts of it is probably the fault of the actress. But that's all I can say about it.

game changers dont usually happen at the start of books. Season 4 is the rest of book 3. novels are all about the small events doing enough character progression to keep you reading till something happens. Game of thrones will never be a series like 24 or Angel or Buffy the Vamp slayer where they have big fights every episode. If you dont like character development and just want big big big big big big big big big big big big big big big big big big big big big big every week then you'll probably give up with the show half way through the next series because it is a slow paced novel

Haha. No I won't. I too like character development. I find breaking bad slow at times, but I haven't given up watching that, as I did a lot of other shows which had slow moments. All I'm saying is that RW doesn't make a medicore season awesome.

Seriously? People losing limbs are game changers? Look things have happened to certain characters, but in the larger context, the struggle for the throne hasn't changed at all. Everything is where it was last season, assuming you could see Robb's defeat early this season.

I suppose it depends how you view the story; to me it's very character driven and explores the politics & relationships in their lives in the context of the war for the throne. I can see why someone else may view it solely as the 'game of thrones' and what's important is who's sitting on the Iron Throne and the progress on how they get there. Different strokes, and that.

The bigger picture (war, picking sides, becoming king etc) is a huge draw of the story, but without the strong characters the show would fall flat and become generic fantasy - and the one thing you can't complain about this season is character development, IMO

I thought this season was better than season 2 and on par with season 1. I think I still like season 1 the best though.
