Yeah, I was told that the Pilots to both shows weren't a very good precursor of things to come, I just wanted to get myself a feel for the humor knowing that they build on it as time goes on.

AJB. I'll take your word on it, that beautiful fucker in your sig alone is making me want to hunt down a compilation of all his best bits. WOOLCOCK told me that season 1 wasn't that great, but then it becomes spectacular. That's exactly how I felt with season 1 of Always Sunny vs the subsequent episodes. They were all great, but there was a quality shift for the better as everyone got more comfortable with their roles.

Season 1 of Parks & Rec is a totally different beast. They actually tweak Leslie's character quite a bit at the end of the season, and it really steps it up from there. If you're not feeling it in the first few episodes blarg, tough it out and wait for season 2.

Community was kind of similar for me when I first watched. It took me about half of season 1 until I really 'got it'. It doesn't really click into gear until midway through that season anyway. It ends really strong though with some of my favourite episodes.

Good, haha, .

Yeah, that's a great moment in my sig, you'll learn it's significance regarding Ron's soberness (or lack thereof) in due course.

There is some pretty good compilations out there on YouTube, I hadn't checked them out until I'd watched all the seasons though, so as to see them in their 'prime' first so to speak.

Yeah, I think because of the quality of season 2 - 5 and the smaller amount of episodes season 1 is under-rated, but it is better season on season, so it's understandable.

Quite a few of us will be interested, me and WOOLCOCK as you mentioned, so let us know what you think as you go.

Sweet to hear both of your positive feedbacks, i'm finding it harder and harder to invest in multi-season shows because of the investment, if something doesn't grab me from the getgo, I usually lose interest and move on to something else. Got a good vibe with both shows so it's all

AJB. I'll definitely be doing that, might go the WC route of reviewing each season as they finish, won't review every singe episode since i'd lose feeling in my fingers haha

btw, did you jump on the Sunny bandwagon yet? Maybe my memory fails me, but i'm sure you were the one that was interested in checking it out after reading my convo with WC about it in TTT.

I'm kinda' looking at the TTT thread just now so I'll get you in there too, but yeah, I'd mentioned It's Always Sunny, I've watched episode 1, I want to watch more, I'm going to download season 1, just doing some transferring and stuff, then I'll download it in literally a couple of hours to a couple of days, definitely going to check out more, interested enough.

You'll love it, and that's a safe bet. I don't know anyone that doesn't unless they didn't give the show a fair chance.

This is how I initially pitched it to WC which got him interested, it's a general idea of what the show is about without giving anything away. There's been great reviews of it posted on this thread by a few people, but they're spoilers ridden.

I can't even begin to describe how off the charts hilarious "Always Sunny" is. 3 of the 5 main characters on the show actually wrote it. They initially wanted to get well known actors for the project but opted to play the parts themselves. That's why it takes time to get used to the show, the first season are the actors fleshing out their characters and finding their groove, but once they do the show absolutely nails on all cylinders.

This is one of the few comedy sitcoms where I haven't seen a single episode that bored me. Quite the opposite, the plot for every episode keeps you engaged and the writing is spot on with whip sharp sarcasm and irony. Like ABH said, none of the characters have any kind of redeeming quality whatsoever, to the point where irl they'd be in Jail or dead by the time they got to the second season. The show has that Arrested Development meets Seinfeld feel (without the canned laughter bullshit that ruins sitcoms), only its much more crude, controversial and wacky than both shows combined, and that's not a fault at all. FX is basically like Adult Swim where they're very loose with their content, so they gave the writers complete carte blanche to open the envelope. Even Comedy Central picked up the show and let everything fly. It's the type of show that will manage to offend absolutely everyone, but they do it in such a quirky and clever way that all is forgiven. The show even has a unique way of presenting it's episode titles before every show, and they follow it up with a borderline abnoxious intro to the sound of 1950's Heinz Kiessling lol

WOOLCOCK, there's no way you won't enjoy this if you loved AD and The Thick of It. That's my type of humor too. Haven't regretted Always Sunny one bit, almost every episode has me belly laughing.

Hope my brief attempt at selling the show trimmed down the wait to at least a year

Good sell of the show, I read that the 3 main characters/actors wrote the show, and it's quite clear from the first episode that the show would have 'legs', as you say to be consistent for 8 seasons, sounds promising for me then, like you said, I'll post more about it - if it's a show I become a fan of - as I do with some of the shows I watch, I liked the pace of it initially, the humor between the 3 characters and from scene to scene particularly, thanks for your insight, .

Just finished Six Feet Under, great show. Now started watching Dexter. Seven episodes in, so far it's a great show. Michael Hall is great in both.

Finally got around to checking out the respective Pilots for two of WOOLCOCK's recommendations. Got a feel for the humor of both, and I don't know which show i'll start off with. They're both interesting for different reasons, and equally engaging. Apparently Parks and Rec developes into a beast, but i'm also feeling the charm of Community. Community is much more accessible, but i'm also a sucker for the more subtle, sharper and slightly darker humor that Park and Rec seems to draw inspiration from. Here's my review for both:

Spoiler for Parks and Rec Pilot:

Park and Recs episode 1, I could instantly grasp this show's charm even knowing that it fleshes itself out better with subsequent episodes. Based on one episode, I can tell that each episodes will be connected and meant to be followed linearly unlike the Seinfeld "pick any episode" formula. Reminded me of the Office UK right off the bat with the talking head Documentary approach, and the delivery of the humor is also very similar.

The overzealous Leslie is already a character they can play off of in countless different scenarios, and the girl that plays her already has the facial expressions down pat. She's clearly coming across as borderline mentally ill, but if it's a show meant to be far fetched like "Always Sunny" then that may not be too much to be looking into.

Swanson is by far the most interesting character , his "I don't give a fuck" cynicism and shady allure is brilliantly incarnated by Nick Offerman. From comparing his business model to Chuck E. Cheese to affirming his absolute obnoxiousness by giving the camera THAT LOOK as he throws Lesie's Pit photos in the trash just an instantly likeable character who leaves an exclamation mark at the end of the episode with his Will Arnett-esque adulation of the Bob Knight portrait in the office, leaving you wanting to see more of this guy.

The Ann and Tom characters did nothing for me so far, but i'm sure i'll get used to them as time goes on. I did get a chuckle from Tom's derailing of the Pit issue by tangentially flirting with Rashida.

That brings me to the humor delivery. It didn't make me laugh at every turn, but I did enjoy some of the lines like at the Community complaints where the guy talks about the head of the Police being a 9th degree Mason. Definitely my type of humor , and I can see them building off of that as time goes on. The pacing is good, the delivery is good, and the Swanson character is perfect.

Spoiler for Community Pilot:
Right off the bat, this seems more snappy than some of my favorite comedies, but less poignant. Comes across like a typical American sitcom reminiscent of the IT Crowd, only with better production, a more interesting cast and the dialogue is a bit more clever. The bombastic and juvenile feel of the show is something I need to get used to after being spoiled by shows like Arrested Developement and Always Sunny, but it shouldn't be a very difficult adjustment. Despite this, I was thoroughly entertained.

Episode's high point was Jeff's motivational speech to the Community trying to win favors with Britta. Little things throughout that made me laugh such as the line "We can give Ben Affleck an Oscar" , Pierce's "The Dalai Lama and I..." line after Jeff talks about the need for his wisdom, or even the stabs at Michael Douglas are great touches that help balance out the slapstick, and it's nice to know they're not afraid to reference well known people and take shots at them. Little things like Pierce telling Jeff "You remind me of me when I was your age" and Jeff responding with "Well, guess I deserve that" gave me a good laugh.

The characters are varied, everyone seems comfortable in their roles and that could make for a very entertaining dynamic. Jeff is already showing signs of being a self-conceited prick 'ala Dennis Reynolds, but he's also very smart, and it's fun to listen to his nuggets of wisdom even if he's being deceptive. His romantic link to Britta is an interesting storyarc in and of itself, and her "easy going yet tough nut to crack" personality makes it fun to see where this will lead. Ana seems to be the most charismatic of the bunch, and I can tell she'll be a force to be reckoned with based on the cult following she has garnered out of all the characters.

It was a nice touch to end the episode with a John Hughes homage by playing a rendition of the Breakfast Club theme song. Definitely looking forward to more.

Two of the best shows on TV to come down the pike in a good while. PARKS will only continue to grow on you in the charm department. Community will do a 180 on you & before you know it, that pilot will feel like a very distant memory. By no means is this a negative. Although I feel the show hit their highest marks within Season Two.
