Anime Discusssion Thread

RIP ANIME DISCUSSION THREAD 2007-2013

Well folks, it's been 6 years and 5000+ posts to the old anime thread, but I've received a PM requesting me to do this because it is time for it to be put down. But don't shed a tear folks, for just like the Land of the Rising Sun, the light will always shine on this thread. I only wish my opening post can do it justice.

I think it's appropriate to start the new thread just as the old one started, since there's so many new faces. Personally, I'd like to thank Near, and Seph, and HoL, and all the other old timers that made that thread great for years, and once again welcome all the new faces of more recent years.

To start this thread: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE ANIME AND WHY?

1. Initial D: The manliest, most bad ass, car anime around. Wangan Midnight? Pfft. Can't touch Initial D, and now that Season 5 is under way after a 7 year hiatus, it's the perfect time to catch up the first 3 seasons and movie. Takumi Fujiwara is what Ryan Gosling wishes he was in Drive.

2. Last Exile: I don't think there's enough shows out there centered around fighter pilots, let alone in a steam punk setting. I don't know how anyone could watch the intro and not at least check it out. Once again, had a recent sequel, not on par with the original, but still gripping for me. IMMELMENN TURN.

3. Fist of the North Star (original): So fucking badass, I wish I could go around really life screaming like Kenshiro.

4. Dragonball: Z usually gets all of the love, but I argued more then once in the old thread that Z is where the Dragonball franchise started to decline, not GT. Dragonball is such an amazing and whimsical adventure with maybe some fighting and martial arts tournaments thrown in. Z is nonstop fighting, save the world bullshit.

5. Yu Yu Hakusho: 2nd and 4th seasons stand above the rest for me, 4th season normally gets a bad rap, but 3rd season was far worse for me.

I'm not an anime guy, but I've seen Fist of the North Star. I have no fucking clue what was going on but it seemed like some people had the inexplicable ability to grow ENORMOUS out of the blue. Oh and one guy punched skyscrapers to the ground and walked through the rubble...I mean literally walked through the concrete. Oh shit it's all kinda flooding back...RAU.

There was a live action Fist of the North Star as well. It had Chris Penn. It owned.

Favorite anime? I can't really name my "favorite" but Ergo Proxy instantly comes in mind since I really enjoyed that anime.I can't really name why,I guess it was just the Gothic Cyberpunk atmosphere in the anime and the music that drives me to love the anime.

Not an aficionado by any stretch, but I can watch Akira again and again and I also loved the second Vampire Hunter D, Bloodlust, made in 2000.

Fist of the North Star is epic, but like Mr said, it took me a few watches before I understood what the fuck was going on.

(Y) on Ergo Proxy, I loved that anime to death.

Texhnolyze and Ghost in a Shell are some other good cyberpunk style animes worth checking out. Though i'm sure most of you are familiar with GIAS already.

To name my favorite anime would take paragraphs upon paragraphs, something even I don't wanna read right now (and I am egotistical enough to go back and read some of my own stuff) I'll... Just leave a very shortened list.

(summary for each anime in spoiler so they can be avoided if you do not want to read, also Image heavy)

Needless

Spoiler for summary:

Cheesy, old school action, hilarious, and wrong comedy. Needless is a mix of old school and new school anime/manga. The story revolves around Blade, a "priest" (a title that is spared no irony when ihis one true weakness is later revealed) with the ability to copy other Needless' abilities, Eve, a shapeshifting girl with a insanely high metabolism and horrible memory when it comes to names, and Cruz, the surviving member of a resistance group with a strong strategy trait (in sharp contrast of the fact he is essentially the group's whipping boy, particularly Eve) one of the few action anime I have seen as of late where the comedy mid battle doesn't feel uncomfortably off-beat.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Spoiler for summary:

Outright my favorite Mecha Anime (take that Gundam!) the characters and art style sets itself far apart from other Mecha- anime immediately and sets its own standards. Better yet, the story doesn't end as simply as most anime in its fashion does, and characters aren't exactly as they seem as time progresses in the series. Definitely a must watch for Mecha/Action/Comedy fans.

Durarara! And Bacanno!

Spoiler for Summary:
Durarara!
Bacanno

seeing that both originated as light novels from the same writer, and have similar story style, I felt parring the two together was fitting. Durarara! Is the story about the many lives revolving around a section in Tokyo called Ikebukuro, particularly the mysterious gang, the Dollars. From the psychotically strong and short tempered Shizuo and the manipulative Izaya, to the mysterious Rider in Black, Celty, Durarara! has one of the most intriguing cast of characters, rivaled by few.
Bacanno! much like Durarara! is based not on a particular character, but a catalyst point, in this case being an elixir of immortality. The story, which jumps from timeline to timeline, can be confusing, but once the pieces add together, one would be hard pressed to be turned away by the time skips. Also, Ladd Russo is frickin' nuts, in an awesome way.

Tokyo Godfathers

Spoiler for :

had to mention one anime movie, might as well be the BEST CHRISTMAS MOVIE, EVER. Satoshi Kon's tale of three homeless finding a infant in a pile of trash sets a wild adventure on X-Mas eve. The art style and story are blended exceptionally well, and the main characters' back stories ties everything together. It's been tradition to watch Tokyo Godfathers Christmas week for the past few years.

Oh, and Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli films... Seriously, nothing more needs to be said about that... Miyazaki rules.
