Age seems to be kind of a problem with the way she's maturing.
Unless the script made a few changes to the graphic novel.

I don't see anything they really need to change as far as that goes. Instead of having problems with 6th grade "it" girls she'll have problems with 10th grade "it" girls or whatever.

I haven't read the book so yeah, none of this matters to me tbh. Whatever the movie feeds me is what I'll take. I swear the glee stars are people way over 20 playing high school students.
