halle berry got an oscar for Monster's Ball. I don't think it was an oscar worthy perfomrance however; I agree with you, she is over ratted.
This is a tough question
Males: Leonardo Di Caprio, Christopher Lee, Denzel Washington
Females: Halle Berry, Catherine Zeta Jones (she was, now she isn't), Natalie Portman
this is acting-praise-wise; not popularity. The popularity over rattedness of certain actors is outrageous today. When Channing Tatum pulls in more viewers than Giovanni Ribisi; fuck a lot.
Leonardo Di Caprio has become one of the more dependable leading men. Like Depp, he can carry an entire picture. He was exceptionally good in The Aviator. And I agree with you on Ribisi, he's great.
Nicole Kidman owns this thread. Awful, awful actress.
She’s a good actress. If you need convincing, study Dogville. More? Margot at the Wedding; The Others; Eyes Wide Shut.
Johnny Depp is by far the most overrated actor.
Donnie Brasco, Blow, Public Enemies, The Rum Diary... he is quite watchable. He has the charisma to carry entire films, even shitty ones (why I dropped The Rum Diary). It’s an uncommon quality.
Tom Cruise, Gerard Butler, Christian Bale, Jennifer Anniston, Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Jack Black (IDK if he's rated highly I just fucking hate him).....God I could go on and on. I pretty much dislike the average actor's performance and find most of them phony and unconvincing anyway. It's most of the reason I don't watch too many movies.
See, it depends on the director. A strong female character director like Holofcener got a solid performance out of her. She seldom gets a bad performance from one of her women.
Depp isn't overrated. He's not in Day-Lewis or Oldman's league, but few are.
DDL isn’t within worlds of Oldman.
I think Meryl Streep is overrated in all that comedy whacky stuff she does every now and again. Unless she's in a dead serious role I have no interest watching her.
Was The Iron Lady a comedy? She had to have been mocking Thatcher. Give me Julianne Moore in that role, any day.
Her biggest achievement was Basic Instinct.
She’s perfect in Casino.
Adam Sandler holds his own in Punch-Drunk Love. It kind of reminds me of Ben Stiller in Greenberg. Both can definitely traverse genres. I would like to see Sandler do more atypical roles, maybe even an action/thriller.
Angelina Jolie. The worst actress of her generation.
John Malkovich. I find him excruciatingly difficult to watch.
Cate Blanchett. Cartoonish in The Aviator and I’m Not There, yet both roles yielded her critical claim.
Meryl Streep. HAM! I can’t see a Steep film without thinking she’s overcooked it.
If one person rates Keanu Reeves, he’s overrated. Near dreadful.
