Re: Overrated actors and actresses

I understand what you mean. I think alot of the blame goes to Nicolas Winding Refn's direction of making an atmospheric movie will little substance, but Gosling didn't make me feel like he was an emotionally complex character with dark undertones at all, instead he came across to me as an actor going through the motions. His blank staring looked retarded more than anything. Take Deniro's performance in Taxi Driver as an example, he had similar personality traits, but actually made you believe that he was a ticking timebomb waiting to snap. A great actor can turn shit into gold, and Gosling's acting didn't do anything for me.

Re: Overrated actors and actresses

I don't think Bickle and Driver are that similar in that the movies aren't trying to accomplish the same thing. Drive is pretty much about a mythological tragic hero in a modern world. Taxi Driver definitely isn't about that lol.

Glad you mentioned the direction because I didn't want to assume anything, but I did think that it's probably Refn's direction you didn't like, rather than Gosling's performance.

Gosling's stares are supposed to look borderline retarded. Driver is barely a part of the world he inhabits.

Re: Overrated actors and actresses

Yeah i'm not a big fan of the movie as a whole. Some of my favorite movies are atmospheric so it's not the sub-genre it falls into, maybe it's just the fact that I thought it was a poorly realized atmospheric movie. The two leads did absolutely nothing for me, and some of their scenes were borderline cringeworthy. I actually did want to like Drive and tried very hard to overlook the stuff I didnt like, all things considered, I think it had potential to be a very good movie had more care went into the project.

Bickle and Driver are very similar in their handling of emotional control. They're both introverts disgusted by the ills of society, but try to put on a front before shit boils over. They both exhibit odd social skills, especially with the females. They're both Drivers, but that doesnt add that much to the core personality.

If Gosling's retarded blank stares are a reflection of the world he inhabits, that alone does say alot about this movie lol

They're only similar if you think Drive is supposed to be realistic. It's not. Not like Taxi Driver is.

I don't know most actors/actressess are rated about where they should be. Tom Cruise is probably the most overrated actor but only because he gets paid so much and has been around forever. I don't think anyone thinks he's Olivier or Oldman.
Tom Cruise is a level above most actors tbf. He's no De Niro or Al Pacino, but you can see some serious talent there. I still consider his performance in Collateral as one of my all-time favourites.

He is really good in that. He just overacts so often in almost everything else. It's always just Tom Cruise playing this guy or that guy.

Re: Overrated actors and actresses

It doesn't necessarily need to be a "realistic" movie for it to be believable and engaging. The aforementioned 'Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus' isn't entirely realistic ether, but the lore and performances are captivating enough that it draws you in and makes you want to get lost in the world and suspend disbelief. David Lynch was a master at making dark, atmospheric movies that weren't realistic to mundane life, but the performances and direction still draw you in.

When I compared Bickle to Driver, I was just talking about the way they convincingly deliver their performances given similar character traits, that's pretty much where the comparisons stopped.

Can't agree more that movies don't need to be realistic to be interesting. Drive is one of those to me.

Re: Overrated actors and actresses

Was Julia Roberts ever considered a good actress? My mom recently said to me, "whatever happened to that Julia Roberts...she was such a good actress". lol I've never seen her be a good actress...not in the strictest sense of the word, "good". But was she at one time?
