Gosling is too much of a mixed bag for me to call him great. I certainly wouldn't call him the next DeNiro just yet. Like I said, I absolutely loved Stay and Gosling was a key part of that movie, I also enjoyed his performance in Half Nelson. His performance is Drive however was absolutely horrible in my opinion, and that's quite possibly the movie that put him on the map along with Notebook. He's a capable actor, I just think some people overrate the guy.

I was a huge fan of Depp when I was younger, but later on in life he's not someone I followed closely. I did love his performance in Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Mad props to Depp for volunteering to come in and act Heath Ledger's scenes after he died. he and Jude Law literally saved the movie.

I can see some not liking Gosling's I guess you would call it understated performance in Drive but I loved it for the character and the film. I thought it fit well with the movie's pacing, the brutality he brought in the second half, and the pounding soundtrack played throughout the film.

His performance in Drive annoyed me, seemed like the guy was affected by Cerebral Palsy. Blank staring is fine once in a while, but when it's a constant throughout the movie, and when you display emotional responses that are as sincere as a $3 bill, it brings the movie down a notch.

I'm sorry. I didn't like his performance in Drive. If i'm led to believe that I might be wrong on that judgement then i'll give it another viewing, but I doubt my opinion will change.

It's ok not to like it. I'd be an idiot to tell you what you like or don't like, but Driver was very clearly not all there emotionally. He was extremely awkward in any situation that didn't involve extreme violence, driving, etc. It's intentional that he's weird as hell. Something is not right with him. I loved that we never found out or even got much of a clue into why he was the way he was. He was just the Driver.

The Driver is severely disconnected from other people (probably a sociopath) and his developing relationship with Irene starts to make him feel more human (the song at the end), and obviously he has to shatter the relationship in order to save her.

As a crazy person who feels alienated from the world I can relate.
