No. The Rock is an average actor at best. I'd rather have a shorter but v.good actor, than a well built but mediocre one.

There might have been better people for the job that Cruise, but Rock ain't one of them

Thats the thing, i'm a huge fan of the books so i'm kind of hesitant to see it considering that Tom Cruise is nothing like how i would picture Jack Reacher. The way the character is described in the books is completely different to Tom Cruise. Reacher is written as being ~10 inches taller and 100 pounds heavier than Cruise

Like Nick, I might be one or two people on here that actually follow the books, i've read all of them except the newest one at least twice and Cruise, while he did a bit better than I expected he still wasn't right for the part. I don't think the rock would have been much better because I don't really rate him as an actor anyways.

Ray Stevenson (minus the accent) or Ryan Hurst (Opie from SoA) are the first two guys I think of offhand I would cast. Probably lean more towards Hurst though since he is younger (although Stevenson is closer to his actual age in the books) and more menacing looking. And its not the size issue that hurts Cruise playing Reacher. Its the fact no one buys Cruise as a silent, brooding badass and Reacher is obviously a character inspired by guys like Clint Eastwood or Charles Bronson. The scene where the guys confronted him in the bar trying to pick a fight felt so wrong.

Obviously however the issue there is neither Stevenson or Hurst are box office draws, so fans of the book were always going to have to compromise. Its an alright movie, something someone who has no expectations would enjoy I think but for people like Rush and myself its kind of disheartening when a character we've grown to love over the last 15 years is played by someone who just is a total misconception of our own expectations. And that seems to be a fairly regular feeling from fans of the book.

Tom Cruise is awesome, I don't know how people can say he isn't, and this is coming from the like 1% of women who doesn't think he is attractive in any way, so I ain't sticking up for him because he drenches my panties.

What are sone other examples of a situation like this where they "miscast" according to book fans? Only one popping out right now is Ledger as Joker.

My wife is a huge Michael Connelly fan and has an irrational hatred for Clint Eastwood for fucking up her favorite book, Bloodwork. Thankfully I've been able to show her Clint has done some good stuff.

Ser Loras, Knight of Flowers is hilariously miscast in Game of Thrones, but I'd have to think about major miscasts in other translations. Loras is the biggest that comes to mind. Well, him and The Mountain. Need to recast Conan Stevens fast...like before season 4 fast.

I generally don't have a problem with Cruise and hes in a lot of movies I really enjoy (MI: series, Collateral, Last Samurai, Few Good Men, etc) but hes not right for this character.

I should have quoted, sorry, that wasn't meant for you, lol. Someone on the first page was talking about how Cruise sucked (I think they said he was overrated as well).
