why the fuck is The Hoff so popular in Germany?

I know about that song 'looking for freedom" but that can't be the sole reason right? I mean he isn't the best singer, more like a mediocre one on an alcohol fueled karaoke night.

No offense to The Hoff I think he was awesome as Knight Rider and he comes across as a great dude but I always wondered.. can anyone tell? Any Germans here? I don;t live near the border and I don't know any germans so.
