Somebody mentioned it in this forum months ago and he is spot on. Both Nicholson and Ledger were great but the difference is that Nicholson is already crazy enough so basically he played himself. Ledger on the other side played something he never played before what is totally opposite of his former movie roles and even opposite of him as person.

I compare Ledger as Joker always with Johnny Depp and his movie roles

He did a fantastic job with the role but I do agree it was overhyped somewhat because of his death. Whether he deserved an Oscar or not I don't know, I don't usually watch too many films.

Great performance but I felt the dude that played Harvey Dent stole the show imo. Don't really watch many films to make an unbiased comparison but yeah I think it was a solid performance that's meritable of an oscar.

I agree with this.

But for the question the OP asked... based on who else was up for the Oscar he absolutely deserved and earned it. Honestly thought RDJ was better as Tony Stark in Iron Man that year though.

Heath Ledger gave one of the greatest performances of all time as The Joker. No Australian accent, different tone of voice, the guy was a stranger to all of us. He disassociated himself from...himself and we saw an entirely different person. THIS is what acting is about!
