That was the point I was trying to make too. If they had maintained something near the level of the original, but still told a different story, I would have loved it. I actually liked the idea of going in a different direction to keep fans of the comics, like me, in the dark as to what happens as anyone else. But Kirkman and Co. haven't been able to do that, which makes the huge deviations from the comic seem unnecessary right now.
The writing crew seem to be having some issues amongst themselves too. Darabont already left and I think Glen Mazarra is leaving after this season is done. Just my opinion, but they seem to have some serious creative differences on that team.
