Default Dungeons and Dragons

Dungeons and Dragons the role playing game was a big part of my childhood back in the day but I swayed off it as a teenager. I was looking to get back into it but wizards of the coast don't seem like they are really trying to appeal to new players which is strange. I used to play the red box and the dungeon master board game and was looking to get into the game once again. Are the new rules any good? Any players on here? If so crack on and tell me what draws you to the game, your adventures and what you make of where the rpg is heading in the twenty first century.

I played 3.5 some, but didn't like the looks of 4.

Yeah I bought the pretty pricey 3.5 players manual and Dungeon master manual only for them to revamp the system a couple of months after my purchase. After that point I pretty much gave up interest.

Play 3.5 if you're going to play. There is an incredible amount of books out there for this system. Of course all you need is the PHB, DMG, and a MM.

4E has all kinds of problems. So does 3.5, but at least 3.5 works despite the game breaking down at high levels. Who plays high level though?

Pretty sure a 5E is coming out relatively soon. 4E was a massive failure.

Yeah MrMister I think I've still got the manuals in the attic. I used to use the board from the dungeon master board game for my games and I must say it worked really well. It gave my players options on to where in the castle bored they wanted to explore and made for various games before the board was irrelevant.

As for what you stated about the rules, every set I have come across have some major flaws but as long as the DM uses common sense and a bit of descretion games play out well.

A book I'd get is Tome of Battle: Book of the Nine Swords if you don't have it. It's for the melee characters/non magic users. While it can't bring them totally in line with Wizard, Cleric, and Druid, it does close the gap a little and gives more options to melee.

Thanks for that dude I'll look into that one. I find I have to vary the gameplay from hack and slash one week to an in a tavern scenerio the next in order for my players to become equally involved. I have two thief type characters in my band who don't really have alot to do when big battles ensue therefore to equal the playing field every so often I'll throw in a scenerio that has very little combat involved. It works well as I throw in a lot of puzzles which I incorparate as tavern games and other things and these encounters can tie in well with the next big adventure so therefore I use them as 'prequel' quests.

All you really need is the Player's Handbook, DM Guide, a Monster's Compendium and your imagination. Oh and some dice of course. I taught my kids how to play.

i have most of the 3.5 and some of the 4s...i didnt have any probs with the 4s, but you can get them all on pdf online, which i also did when i dm'd so everyone else could use the books while im on the laptop. i did a high lvl campaign, but only used epic players for monster ideas, because that book is so unbalanced as hell
