Are shows like this real?

For exmaer, Bar Rescue, kitchen nightmares, Resturaunt Makeover, etc.

Seems like every show, the owner of the place says "I dont need your F'n help" then by the end of the show "Thank you sir, this place looks awesome now"

I heard somewhere that the shows go to the places before hand, screw it up, and then come in to "save the day"

I really wonder about Storage Wars (they make 100x profit on most lockers) and even Judge shows (or people are just plain stupid, which is possible)

I don't care. I love BarRescue. My favorite show on TV right now.

They are pre-planned. The things that happen are most likely real scenarios that have occurred at the bar/restaurant that they duplicate for the cameras. And the drama is usually added in. What sound-minded business owner is going to turn down professional staff training and a total makeover of their place, plus national exposure, because "it's my damn bar"?

Storage Wars is legit, but the auctions usually include way more than 3 lockers, they just use the most interesting/profitable ones for TV.

I think it has just been commonly excepted that most reality shows are mostly real but they gotta make up some drama to make it more entertaining. Its kinda like how wrestling is real but it isn't

I can remember Kitchen Nightmares where one guy dropped a steak on the floor, picked it up and put it on the grill or whatever and they made a bit deal about it.

Apparently though, the man who dropped the steak was a chef hired by the company who makes the show solely for the time they were filming and has never worked at the restaurant featured. I'm sure they ended up suing the company and won.

That doesn't make it fake, but there are definitely things pushed for entertainment.

This is right on the money. Reality shows are usually "real" to a point, but there is manufactured drama. A few examples:

Big Brother - The people in the Diary Room influence players, they give them leading questions and bring up what would be best for television. Conversations and happenings in the house are frequently shown out of order on the TV show to add more drama.

Storage Wars - One of the buyers, Barry, had never been to a storage auction prior to his appearances in the show. The show's executive producer/narrator, Thom Beers, is friends with Barry and asked him to star in the show. There have been instances where between shots, items change positions in a storage unit even though nobody is allowed in the unit until it has been sold.

Survivor - Much of the island scenery is manufactured. They produce and paint tribal looking figures and add them to the surroundings. The cameramen interact with the castaways quite often.

Pretty much every kitchen/bar/home makeover show is more heavily manufactured than reality shows that have cash prizes. There are a lot of actors hired to make the show more entertaining. Hell's Kitchen has hired actors to play customers and walk out/give shocked reactions.

Things that annoy me on shows like this are when they cut to a contestant in a secluded room to talk about the " current situation" as if it were happening there and then. Especially hells kitchen

Gordon: " we're going to have a challenge on who can cook food for a panel of pretentious judges
* cuts to storage room*
Contestant A " i've got this won for sure woo!"

Gordon " you're shit and so is your entire family because of this one dish

* cuts to storage room*
contestant a: damn

I Don't watch much of these reality shows, but Storage Wars seems real and is generally fun. I mean they all lose quite a bit of money at times.

One that i'm guessing is one hundred percent real is Pawn Stars, which is by far my favorite reality tv show. The workers are fun too watch, and you pick up neat bits of history along the way too.
