Re: Comics and Graphic Novels Vol. 2

I must confess, it's been a long... Long time since I purchased comic books outside of Manga and Webcomic Prints. That was until earlier this year when I decided to give the new Ultimate Spider-man a look, plus Free Comic Book Day (still can't get over the fact that the local comic book store's owner actually started FCBD.)

Anyways, last Saturday, Flying Colors had a artist signing for Thien Pham's new book "Sumo". It's about an American traveling to Japan to become a Sumo Wrestler. Pretty good read. Thien's a cool guy too.

Didn't just grab Sumo though. I got a few other books. Two of them took me by pleasant surprise Batman and Robin #15 and Avengers Arena #1.

Batman and Robin is my first DC comic in ages. Mainly because... I really don't like DC outside a few exceptions, Batman being one. Probably a good spot for me to try and get along with DC for once, Joker's always been my favorite DC villain, and- holy crap on a bat mobile what the hell happened to his face?!

Avengers Arena is Marvel's take on Battle Royale, so I jumped for the book immediately. Arcade's the "Teacher" for this battle, and with several members of Avengers Academy being forced to battle each other, including Reptil and X-23, I definitely want to see how this series plays out.

The cover for issue 1 screams "Battle Royale" enough as is. You could imagine how fast I was to grab the sucker. Heard issue 2 is out, or about to be released this week.

It is out already. Liked the first issue and the end was well done even though I should have seen it coming a mile off

Avenger's Academy was so amazing. Arena has been very disappointing so far.

Did anyone read Hawkeye this week?

I got the feeling Arena is gonna be one of those hit or miss series, but it's a bit hard to tell so early.

How is Hawkeye? Thien Pham was pretty high on the series and did a comic slam (think reading pages of a comic in a Def Poetry Jam style) on I think Hawkeye #4 or #5. I might grab an issue or two next time I go buy comics.

You serious? This year, like most years, was great. What exactly did you read?
