I disagree (obviously, since I love the movie). In fact I thought it was a triumph from start to finish. I saw your post about it, and that's fair enough because you give good arguments as to why you disliked it.
Drive didn't fail at all. You know what did though? The New World. I'm just not a Malick fan, though I did like The Tree of Life. Too much mumbling, yelling, dramatic to the point where it's comical. The movie looks good and the score is fantastic, I'll give it that. There is some really bad editing in this one as well. The love story does work I guess, but I just didn't care. It wasn't compelling. It wasn't fascinating. It wasn't enthralling. I'm totally ok for movies to have loose narratives and have images drive the action and be slow builds, but this one just doesn't work at all.
New World is definitely my least favourite Malick film, but I still liked it for the most part. I got invested in the story once Bale's character turned up, but not so much before that. Still, amazing visuals and cinematography all the way through. Can't remember any editing problems with it, but I haven't watched it for ages.
Talking of editing, something that did have really bad editing that nobody else seemed to mention was Looper. It was really bad on occasions to the point it took me out of a few scenes. Movie is really overrated as a whole anyway.
