The year that was brought a number of hype-filled hits. Some of that hoopla was deserved. Plenty of it wasn’t.
So which movies received the most undue recognition? According to an informal survey around the L.A. Times newsroom, there are several viable candidates for the dubious honor of most overrated movie. Did “The Avengers” and its superhero pyrotechnics draw the most unearned praise? “Prometheus" and its cult following? Questing of a more animated sort with "Brave?"
The laughers are represented too. Did 'Ted’s” raunchy slacker comedy merit all its air kisses? "Project X's” low-budget approach to the lowbrow? And the art house isn’t immune to the overrated tag, with the studiously chilly “The Master” garnering its share of hype--and naysayers.

Finally, there's the epic ambition of “Cloud Atlas." The film finished high in our most underappreciated poll--does it have an equal or even greater number of haters?
We’ll put the question to you. Vote in our poll for which movie drew the most undeserved love this year. (Last year, incidentally, the winner was "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1", while "Inception" earned the title in 2010.) We'll tally the votes and hand out the ignoble crown before 2012 is out.
I don't know if the Avengers was overrated, but I never really cared for it all that much. I know it's been overhyped for a very long time since they set that project up a long time in advance. It's a good movie, but to me it's not THAT much better than every other Marvel movie that comes down the pike. I would only call it overrated with the crop of people saying that it's the greatest super hero movie ever made..
On the subject of The Avengers being the most overrated movie of the year, definitely not. Most people would say TDKR but I've talked to and seen more people that disliked it than liked it. I'd go with something like Cabin In The Woods personally.
I guess if you were doing a countdown of the most overrated movies of 2012, Avengers would be #2. I didn't hear a single negative review or comment on The Avengers. It was definitely great and deserves it's praise, but since nothing else got so much (over proportioned) praise, it takes #2 by default.
I thought it was paced really well, didn't have any of the purposefully dragged out stuff that the end of ROTK had (I love that movie though, btw). Considering it's length it felt really fast paced and never dragged or became slow. I enjoyed it a lot, might be a similar case as TDKR though in that I was marking out quite a bit and could ignore some of it's obvious flaws. There was one scene or sequence that I really disliked somewhere in the middle but I could get past that.
