Kinda agree with you on Wild at Heart. It seemed like one of those ideas that Lynch went ahead and did because he couldn't come up with something better.
Mulholland Dr., Blue Velvet, and Lost Highway are my favorite three. Lost Highway I haven't seen in awhile. Probably should re-watch it and give Inland Empire a shot. Surreal, creepy, and freaky is what Lynch does best, so it sounds like I'll like it a lot.
Yeah, Wild at Heart just doesn't have that BV or MD charm. I like the idea behind the film, but it didn't click somehow. And Lost Highway rocks, watched it for the dirst time yesterday, and I as in awe, lol. So bizarre, and I love it.

On the out there Lynch scale, where does it rank? How surreal? How's the horror/is there even horror?
Is the most radical Lynch ever, basically he went out there thinking that the success of Mulholland Drive was a sign of a time change and finally liberated himself completely to make the surreal movie he always wanted to do.
In fact, the movie was made without a script Lynch was just shooting scenes with a little guide and then editing the whole thing. The photography can be awful because it was made on digital camera but Lynch use that like a adventage to make the movie even more creepy, literally is the most creepy of his films.
Like a warning, if you like movies making sense, stay away from it
One thing, and maybe that's why I love his films, that makes Lynch so great is that most of his movies can't be really described. You have to experience them. He works on a different level than most filmmakers. I mean I don't even know how to begin to tell someone about Mulholland Dr or Lost Highway. They just have to see it for themselves (and multiple times if they like it).
I know I probably sound really pretentious here but lol I'm right here dammit.
I've only seen Dune & Mullholland Dr. but I can already say I think you're pretty spot on. I don't even know how to describe either after I finish them. I laughed, I was confused, I was intrigued, etc. If all of his films leave you like that, well, then I have to see more.

Absolutely agreed. He's a mad genius. It's fascinating how his movies make me think about them, days after watching them.

Blue Velvet is a must-watch movie, if only for this sleepy, surreal scene:
