Re: Hope is lost, faith is broken...The Dark Knight Rises - July 20th, 2012 (SPOILERS
Did you guys see this article?
Quote:
‘Cosmopolis’ director gives ‘Dark Knight Rises’ a bad review
Count out one fan of "The Dark Knight Rises." The indie filmmaker David Cronenberg slammed supporters of the movie who call the blockbuster art, saying," I don't think they know what the f--k they're talking about."
The director was speaking to MTV to promote his new film, "Cosmopolis," starring "Twilight" heartthrob Robert Pattinson as a young billionaire whose rarefied world unravels in just one day.
Cronenberg's scathing words were picked up by the Hollywood Reporter and have been catching buzz.
In the interview, the filmmaker, who did direct a movie based on a graphic novel, "A History of Violence," elaborated on his opinion of the caped crusader.
"I don't think they are making them an elevated art form. I think it's still Batman running around in a stupid cape. I just don't think it's elevated. (Director) Christopher Nolan's best movie is 'Memento,' and that is an interesting movie. I don't think his Batman movies are half as interesting though they're 20 million times the expense."
Tiffs over movie content aren't new, of course. Spike Lee famously called out Quentin Tarantino ("Pulp Fiction" and the upcoming "Django Unchained") for using the N-word too much in his movies and wanting to be "an honorary black man."
For his part, Cronenberg did acknowledge that he respected Nolan's mastery of IMAX technology, calling it "really tricky and difficult to do." But he added that the movie was "boring." "A superhero movie, by definition, you know, it's comic book. It's for kids. It's adolescent in its core."
But perhaps the director would be fine channeling his inner adolescent. He admitted, "As an actor, I would play Batman."

I don't agree with Cronenberg because the films are more than just "Batman running around in a stupid cape." There are so many thematic elements in the entire series especially in The Dark Knight Rises as many of us have already pointed out. I also don't agree with him saying superhero movies are just for kids. Good characters and storytelling in films like The Dark Knight or Avengers Assemble can be entertaining or acclaimed by people of all ages. To each is own opinion though. Cronenberg is the experienced film maker after all.

Sounds like he just hates blockbusters. Anyone with a brain would see that Batman isnt just for kids. Avengers probably since it was aimed at kids and teens more with the jokes and kidding there was in it. I saw History of Violence and thought it was great so guy is obviously a good director but prob one of those that thinks lower budget films are are while big bugdet blockbusters arent even close to art.
Never saw Memento even though I think it was Netflix a while back even if I saw it idk if I could say its better than Inception because I love that film a ton.

there are few themes, but honestly, he is kinda right. bottom line is its a comic book superhero movie and by definition, kind of silly
however, comic books can deal with serious stuff too, like any art medium. even superhero comic books can be serious and pretty epic. dark knight rises, though a superhero comic book movie, is kind of mature in tone. a true character piece exploring bruce wayne, the man behind batman.
its just an awesome spectacle with great acting, fantastic sequences, a few clever ideas and the exploration of a character who before the trilogy, often felt like a supporting actor in his own movies. nolan may have taken 'batman' out of the movie titles, but the struggle of bruce wayne, batman and gotham is the heart and soul of the series
edit: why the hell did i type thematic themes at the start? talk about redundant redundancy

God, I need to branch out on this Forum a bit more. I love that this thread exists, this movie was amazing, saw it two weeks ago. Cronenberg sounds completely ignorant, for a man trying to put over the greatness of Memento, he says stupid shit like, 'It's still just Batman running around in a stupid cape'? Pretty much sounding like what you would expect an Indie Director to sound like. I like indpendant films, don't get me wrong but this is ridiculous. Nolan has the talent to make Batman into something more than just a 'Comic Book' movie. Inception is one of my all time favourites and it's no surprise to see most of that cast in this Trilogy. The cast has been amazing, with he exception of Katie Holmes, sorry Katie Holmes fans. Not to mention Hanz 'The Legend' Zimmer doing the score, I shit you nt I have a Hanz Zimmer playlist in my ipod.
Going back to comics/graphic novels, I bought the Watchmen graphic novel before the movie came out. Guy at the bookstore told me I would most likely hate the movie as it wouldn't live up to the epicness of the book and he was right ( although I didn't HATE it). A friend of mine visiting from Ontario stayed at my place and he had seen the movie first and after reading the Graphic ( which he couldn't put down ) was pretty dissappointed with the movie.
Well, that's all I have to say about all of this. I got de-railed a bit there, lol.

His height is listed from 5'9 to 5'10 to Reese's listed height of 5'1 to 5'2. And yes, I looked this stuff up. I have no life.
