Re: SPOILER *all five books* THREAD FOR Game of Thrones (TV series discussion)
I think Grey Wind is dead.
But it is an interesting theory that has made me think.
Martin never writes anything by accident and he did make sure he told you the reader that Raynald Westerling freed Grey Wind from his chains. What was the point of telling you that? To show that even in his final moments Grey Wind was ferocious and killed some Freys? Maybe, but that had all ready been long established that Grey Wind was killer. Was it really worth driving home that point one more time? I don't know. That's not really like Martin to do that.
And if Grey Wind being at that wedding and chained was simply a plot point to get to his head being sewed to Robb's body, then, again, why tell us the reader he was freed? Wouldn't a plot point of the Frey's simply having shot him full of arrows while still chained, made more sense? Especially since it would have left the reader with a what if. What if Grey Wind got free, what if Grey Wind could have saved Robb, etc. Yet, Martin tells us he was freed.
So I will admit, it is an interesting theory, that made me think about the Red Wedding and it's aftermath again, and while there are definitely some things that would make me think that perhaps, perhaps, you're on to something, I don't think that is likely to come to fruition. He's dead.
