And it's all fine and well and good that in theory the *next* book will be good, but having to read through a bunch of shit just to move people around is bad writing. A TON of it could have been condensed or skipped.

And to answer your question MrMister, the answer is:

It's strange to me since the Sansa chapters bored the hell out of me in the beginning of this series, and now she is one of the stories I look forward to the most, because I tend to think she is vastly more important to the ending than I and many others originally thought, especially in books 1 and 2.

That's not strange at all. She was a fucking fuck back in the first book. She has come a LONG way since then, and had to deal with amazing things that would crush others.

What could have been skipped? The whole point of Dany sticking around in Mereen was for her to learn how to rule, and we learned that she is not an effective ruler, which is going to play a part in her story coming up.

I do agree that parts of the book dragged, but it was neccessary for it to all be there. The only other way it would have worked would have been with the original 5 year gap, then we would all be asking the question, what happened during the 5 year gap?

My problems with Dance were Marwyn not showing up, and not enough JonCon and Victarion. If anything more needed to be added, rather than stuff taken away and added.

It's been awhile since I read it, but the Dany stuff went on and on and on and on and on. We can very easily hear in any number of ways that she's been there for however long, and the entire time she was mooning for that one guy, and people were dying of illness. We don't have to read about it in real time.

The Quentyn stuff could have been condensed a lot. I hate characters that are introduced in the middle of a series to not even last 1 book. Especially a POV character.

There was some other stuff I don't remember top of my head, but the fact is- GRRM has been writing books for a very long time. He does this professionally, for money. He has an editing team. They should be able to put out a product that isn't bloated with crap, after taking as long as they did to release it.

If he put out a book a year and stuffed extra characters and slow plot into it, fine. But when your 3rd book is amazing, your fourth book is "meh" at best, and people are complaining about book 5, it's not a good sign. At this point, I don't care how we get there, I just want to see the end of the story. I've almost entirely stopped caring about the journey. And that's sad.

Something happened along the way, because it was clear Martin had this story really zoned out in his head without much difficulty at first.

A Game of Thrones - 1996
A Clash of Kings - 1998
A Storm of Swords - 2000

And now here we are 13 years later. I tend to think some of it has to do with the publishing company to be honest. He originally said 3 books, but then you had the issue of the publishing companies wanting to take A Storm of Swords for example and publish it in 2 or 3 copies because of how long it was. The result was Martin deciding to condense and save some material for other books. And it just grew from there. Perhaps out of control to be honest.

I wonder had they let him do precisely what he wanted from that time period of first publishing 1996-2000 if we'd still be where we are or if this series would have been finished.

I think Martin knows how the story will end...I think I read an interview with him where he said something like (major paraphrasing) "Writing is like going on a journey, you know where it starts and where it ends but everything that happens in between is up to you".

So for A Song of Ice and Fire the journey started with the Starks finding the direwolves and how it will end...I have no clue. Maybe the story won't have an ending. I read on another forum, some user said "The story will end much like it started, amidst an on-going story"

Anyways, what is the significance of "Egg, I dreamed that I was old"? People absolutely lose it for this line because it's so beautiful and were Aemon's dying words.

Possible endings:

Dothraki swarm over the 7 kingdoms, Dany takes over, marries Jon Snow, and has babies. Tyrion runs the kingdom.

Others kill everyone and we have a bad ending.

Others kill most everyone, until Jon Snow and Melisandre lead the Army of Light or whatever and then take over after.

Cersei somehow manages to stave off both Dothraki and Others, and executes Tyrion.

The Greyjoys take control of the dragons, and use them to take over Westeros.

HODOR reveals to all that he is R'hllor, and is using everyone as pawns, his goal to take over the world.

I've got a friend who is convinced that Martin has written a red herring the entire story in making you feel sorry for the Starks, and having everything bad happen to them, because the reality is the Starks are the antagonists of the story. That there is a deep suited connection between the Others and the Starks, going back to the Night's King (thought to be a Stark) and his love for the woman with "white skin, blue eyes, and that was cold as ice" (thought to be an Other).

He thinks this is the whole "The North remembers", "Winter is Coming", that it stands as a metaphor for the Others and their connection to the Starks.

I tell him all the time it's an interesting theory, but there are holes in it.

Personally, I think the ending will involve most people dead, but whatever the threat is, neutralized. The 1 standing survivor from all of the main characters we have met is likely to be Sansa in my opinion.

Possible endings for me are:

And Jaime Lannister, sat on the Iron Throne, and waited to see who would come and claim the realm...

Littlefinger's ultimate goal coming to fruition, which I think could be like a parliamentary Westeros, if not, then LF coming out on top.

Tyrion being one of the only sole survivors, running the kingdom.

Dany and Jon will NOT have a happy ending together.

I'm also pretty convinced the The Others are from Asshai as well, and that The Land of Always Winter leads to, or is Asshai by the Shadow. The Westeros planet has to be a sphere right? If you keep going round from Essos you will arrive at Westeros. Dany is constantly being told that to go west, you must go east, and Asshai has played a far too prominent role to be left out. We also know dragons are from Asshai, and there are said to be ice dragons as well. Also take into account R'hllor's religion is from Asshai, and The Great Other is R'hllors enemy. And why do The Others want to move south of The Wall? Are they trying to escape from something.
