That's what I particularly loved about Season 5. He's constantly being this brown nosing rookie with a sense of superiority about himself that makes him arrogant and annoying, but then you look at his personal life and people like Don & Roger who he's constantly in competition with and you begin to see all his arrogance and coldness to people is just his way of trying to cover up his weaknesses and fears and escape from the realisation that he hates his life and is just plain empty inside. The arc they were teasing for him in the early to mid episodes of Season 5 was extremely dark and coupled with Kartheiser's strong acting it made Pete probably the most interesting character on the show for me at the conclusion of the season.
Honestly the character development throughout Season 5 may have been better than ever before which really demonstrates the quality of the season when you consider character development has been one of Mad Men's consistent strengths alongside the writing and visual aesthetic.
