It just hasn't felt like the same show or the same writers. Did something change to the writing crew? It just feels off like they've reached the point where they're totally out of ideas and they're digging real deep to come up with content.

I'm not one to really follow up with a change in writers. I think it might just be a simple case of it being the 4th season and them exhausting a lot of plot points and issues they can create an episode out of. They've focused on the adults, the children, Jay and how he interacts with Claire and Mitchell, they've covered the major issues surrounding Cam and Mitchell's relationship. I hope they realise the writing is on the wall because they still have funny moments but its becoming clear they either need a break and a chance to think up new ideas or just accept the show is reaching its course where it'll become a parody of itself before too long.
Agree with you on Phil. Like all good characters if you present him well he's a key asset but if you get lazy he'll suffer and drag the show down. Godfather parody really didn't do much for me and felt like a poor way to poke fun at Phil being uncharacteristically 'evil'. Seems the funnier Phil moments are now the more subtle and in the background jokes instead of the main plot he's involved in. Stuff like him sitting on a bench with advertising and partially blocking the writing to reveal 'Not a Man' whilst worrying over a vasectomy was clever and funny, as was the episode where Cam unwittingly places him on a date with Matthew Broderick.
I kind of appreciate Manny and Jay scenes being less frequent. If anything bar Cam and Mitchell the more something gets focused on lately the less it remains consistent. The episode where Hayley and Alex were babysitting Luke and freaking out about him making out with a girl was among the weaker ones imo. Felt really forced and a lazy way for them to do a cliche child storyline in a sitcom.
PARKS continues to shine though. One of the more quotable episodes again this week. Jean Ralphio story had me in stitches!
