Re: TV SHOW discussion thread (NO FUCKING SPOILERS please)
I concur with my American comrade. Mad Men is a slow burner but the presentation, acting and writing is impeccable and its a show that really rewards continued viewing and persistence.
As for the guy who brought up 30 Rock. Its a very good show, great at times but I'd warn you it can be a show that you either love or loathe, especially when things break down into a more comical and 'absurd' element in the later seasons. The main cast are all excellent, the characters are very funny and there's a lot of variety in the humour: from topical, to satirical, to pop culture, to mannerisms and especially some of the more random quotes which make no sense but are timed/delivered well enough to make you laugh. Jack's quote about wearing a suit after 6 being the standout one there.
It probably sounds like I'm dismissing the show slightly, which I'm not. But I won't pretend some of the more sensationalised and over the top stories/episodes can be the ones that really test whether you love the characters enough to get invested in however ridiculous the plot may get..or whether you just lose interest and want something a bit more grounded. I'd say watch the first season to get familiar with the characters and then try and keep going: I found that I enjoyed the characters well enough when the show was more 'basic' and that when plots and episodes started getting more surreal I still loved the characters, the writing and the acting enough to enjoy it.
