I'd say this since you could power through Homeland quicker and be caught up with the ongoing episodes if you like the show. then move onto The Wire and/or then Mad Men. If you like continuous stories you'll probably like The Wire, plus its all wrapped up now and in the end everything fits, even season 2 which will seem like a stand alone story with the same characters when you first watch it.

Dexter would be my last pick. First 2 seasons & 4 are pretty great, other three are kinda inconsistant.

Yeah Homeland should probably be the first option if you like watching shows on a week to week basis. Pretty easy to catch up before it comes back on at the end of the month. The Wire's pretty much loved by everyone I think. Don't think I've seen anyone who deserves to have an opinion not think it's at least good. Mad Men is superb. Probably prioritise The Wire over it though because over 5 seasons it's better. The last 2 seasons of Mad Men have been fantastic though and the first 3 are good. Dexter gets a bad rep these days because of the last couple of season quite frankly being poor. If it stopped after Season 4 or just used Season 5 to wrap the story up then it'd probably still be talked about in the same respect as a show like The Wire. Maybe just below but you get the idea. 1/2/4 are all fantastic. Season 3 not so much but it's still good. Watch Mad Men/Homeland/The Wire all before it though. Haven't seen The Sopranos.

Never watched The Wire but from what I have seen, The Shield is the best cop show.

It's a solid show even if nothing amazing, I'd say its worth a watch (although FYI it does take about 5/6 episodes to get going I found).

I've never seen any of them before, so which one do you think i'd like the most. My favourite shows are LOST, Breaking Bad, Walking Dead and Boardwalk Empire... and i'm not to big on episode long story archs (like Simpsons for example). I much prefer a long continuous story (LOST)
The first 3 shows you mention of your favorites and 3 of my favorites and for that sole reason watch Prison break, It's fucking amazing.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I think I might save The Wire and/or Mad Men for the holidays, as there's a lot of seasons to get through. So it's Homeland i guess. Thanks guys

Worth a watch, the last 8 episodes or so are brilliant since they start focusing on the main storyline.

Also the finale is one of the best action episodes of last year, exciting stuff.

Homeland is great.

I see The Shield was brought up a few posts ago and I can't believe how underrated/underexposed it is. It is definitely in my top 3 TV shows of all time. Vic and Shane were an amazing one-two punch while Lem played both sides unbeknownst to him and Ronnie came into his own in the last few seasons.

Hell, you can get all seven seasons of The Shield in a box-set on Amazon for $73.

As far as Person of Interest goes it is a bit like Law and Order; it is just a procedural police show with not much that links together week to week.
