Oh, yeah, I went and picked that up the day it came out. Reading is kind of my thing. :P Once he's done with WoT he'll be working on WoK 2 next, so it should be out by 2014 latest. What else do you read?
Finished The Name of the Wind. it was good but took me forever to read it since it's a goddamn huge book. I'm not a huge fan of stories where the book is telling about events that happened in the past since i think it takes some of the tension out of it. but it had me wondering how the main character wound up in the position he was in.
Hopefully I can get to The Way of Kings soon, head it was great.
I procrastinated a LOT on finally reading Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fear but they truly were fantastic.
So basically you want dirty, gritty fantasy but you don't want to be bothered reading aSoIaF? Try Joe Abercrombie, then. I was personally unimpressed with him, but he's very similar in style and tone to GRRM, and recommended by a lot of GRRM fans. I just don't like dirty gritty fantasy for the most part, which is why I was like meh.
Where do you guys find good books to read? I go to the store and get a blank when trying to buy a book.
I want to try World War Z though. Anything you guys know that has a GoT type setting? I live Game of Thrones, but don't want to read the books as I prefer the show.
Striker, if you like action/mystery type stuff you should check out Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels (there are 15 of them now). Hes a former Military Cop turned ass kicking drifter and its pretty good shit. Just a giant stoic dude hitchhiking across America kicking ass and taking names, just the kind of character you'd cast Tom Cruise as....
I really enjoyed Greg Rucka's Atticus Kodiak novels too (hes a high end bodyguard) other than maybe the last book of his because the character had changed so much due to circumstances. He wasn't as charming anymore (it was a pretty dark book).
Location: highway jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive
Re: The Book thread.
Die Trying I actually think is the worst Reacher novel, It starts off fine but gets pretty silly towards the end. Other than maybe Nothing to Lose which was just kinda boring in comparison to the others. I know Rush agrees those are the two worst as well. Books really hit their stride around book 6-12.
Currently in the midst of trying to read every Vonnegut novel before the end of the summer. Got through Slaughterhouse, Cats Cradle and Breakfast Of Champions and now on Godbless You Mr Rosewater. Vonnegut is a fucking balrog.
