Did you get that job?

And yeah the books are good but I don't know if i'd recommend them to someone not interested in the genre.

They're more like historical fiction than they are like fantasy. Yes there are supernatural elements, but it's nothing prevalent. You don't have flying wizards tossing spells around all the time. The supernatural is treated more like magical realism really.

Non fantasy fans can definitely enjoy the series. It's about humanity more than it is about anything else.

Reading has always been one of my passions, I majored in English and I'm a licensed English teacher, though unemployed. I like classic literature (Dostoevsky, Austen, Bronte sisters, Fitzgerald, Steinbeck, Salinger, etc.) though over the past five years I've been picking up lighter novels like the Twilight Sagwa and I'm reading Catching Fire now, just for entertainment purposes. I need to be in the mood to read Dostoevsky.
Game of Thrones? That's what I get for reading these books non stop for a month. I meant The Hunger Games trilogy. lol

As for Game of Thrones. I absolutely love them. I'm not a huge fantasy fan to begin with. I enjoy the Lord of the Rings type stuff but that's about it. Game of Thrones is more like Lord of the Rings than say something like Harry Potter... And I only mention that because of the magic use. Harry Potter is total magic and that's just not very prevalent in Game of Thrones.

But if you enjoy Lord of the Rings type stuff then I think you would really enjoy Game of Thrones and the rest of the books. I'm on book four now.

^No, I've had several interviews and I haven't been hired. I think the principals are looking for teachers with actual teaching experience so I'm really at a disadvantage. I've actually been doing a lot of thinking and I've realized that I'd rather be an educational assistant (EA) than a middle school/high school English teacher because teachers have SO MUCH work and responsibilities and they are not financially compensated for everything they do. Teachers are actually getting like a 5% pay cut here in Hawaii, contracts are still being negotiated. Our economy is still trying to bounce back from the stock market crash several years ago. Plus the students in Hawaii, and probably across America, are so unmotivated. I taught Lord of the Flies during my internship this past Fall semester and most of my students could not get into the novel either because they read at an elementary grade level or they just don't care about school, for some it was both. Before teaching the novel I loved it, now I don't think I want to pick it up ever again because of my teaching experience.

Ah, okay.

I like Philippa Gregory novels which is historical fiction so maybe I'll give the first novel a go. I do find novels about humanity interesting.

How many novels are in the series btw?

There are 5 out right now, with two to come. Well we all think it'll end with two. We'll see.

You said you liked Steinbeck in a previous post. While I'm not saying Martin is Steinbeck, he is similar in that the world he creates is pretty freaking bleak and bittersweet is probably the best possible outcome in all scenarios. It's really nothing like Lord of the Rings save both have supernatural stuff. LotR tends to use black and white morality while Game of Thrones is all shades of gray.

Did you watch the HBO show? If so, you got a taste of what the books are like. It's mostly political intrigue with some brutal and graphic combat thrown in at times, as well as plenty of sex. There are definite elements of horror too.

Lol LadyCroft

I was thinking you meant The Hunger Games.

I enjoyed the Lord of the Rings movies but I've never read a Tolkien novel before. May give Games of Thrones a chance at least, though. Seems like a lot of posters here are into it.

Wow, sounds like this is an epic fantasy series, MrMister. I wonder why the author decided to go the TV show route vs. the big screen? Though I'm sure HBO has given the author a nice paycheck, since they are HBO, most writers make a killing when movie adaptations of their stories become international sensations. Perhaps the nature of the material suits a TV series better?

He must be an excellent writer for you to compare him to Steinbeck.

Oh shit I don't want to overrate the guy lol. I do think he's an excellent writer, but he's no Steinbeck. I just wanted to get a frame of reference for you. The tones of both writers are similar in that the world outlook is quite grim and realistic. If you like characters that are both good and bad at the same time, you'll like the novels. It's very much character driven as each chapter is from various character's points of view.

And yes the material is much better suited for a TV series than a series of movies. There are just too many characters and too much detail for a movie.
