Re: Rate & Mini-Summarize the Last Movie You Saw
After a long war, with the use of biological, chemical and nuclear weapons, much of Earth has become uninhabitable and people have become prey to new diseases. Professor Azuma's "neo-cell" project, which is supposed to fix this, has his experiments go terribly wrong and mutants hell bent on destroying mankind escape. Azuma's son Tetsuya, who was killed during the war, is reborn into Casshern. Mankind's last hope against the new mutant threat.
Sounds pretty cool huh? well thats what I thought UNTIL I saw it so poorly executed. Now firstly let me say this is absolutely a visually stunning movie. One of the best, if not THE best I've seen, its art come to life. The cgi is flawless and beautiful to look at. The soundtrack goes great with it as they mix up all types of genres, from epic sounding orchestral masterpieces to heavy metal. Great stuff. Now where is falls WAY short is the story, which is convoluted, confusing, lacking substantial character development, and just really frustrating to sit through. The fight scenes aren't really great either, There's so much shit going on, you don't even know what the hell's happening. It also gets very very preachy towards the end. War is bad, existential questioning and so forth which isn't a bad thing but it felt really forced after a while. It may sound like I hated the movie but i actually didn't I just expected more. Overall not a bad entry into the sci-fi realm, if you liked the matrix you'll probably enjoy Casshern. Never has the term style over substance been more adequate in describing a movie.
