NEVER ENDING STORY

I'm a huge fan of fantasy films, but i've only seen pieces of the 2nd and 3rd film from this series, which naturally never really got me excited about watching the first.

Really brilliant movie, i was really surprised by how dark the first one is. I mean it ain't a horror movie, but it's definitely not your typical children's film either. The special effects were brilliant too, i loved all the cloud scenes.

The film IMO lost a bit its way at the end, with the dialogue getting a bit too cheesy for my liking but until then worth a watch.

7.5/10

Frontier(s)

An extremist right-wing candidate is elected to the French presidency, sparking riots in Paris. Hoping to escape Paris but needing cash, Alex, Tom, Farid, the pregnant Yasmine, and her brother Sami take advantage of the chaos to pull off a robbery. Sami is shot and the group splits up: Alex and Yasmine take Sami to a hospital, and Tom and Farid take the money to a family-run inn near the border. Innkeepers Gilberte and Klaudia claim their rooms are free and seduce the two men.

At the hospital, the emergency room staff report Sami's injury to the police. Sami insists Yasmine run before the police catch her. His dying wish is that Yasmine not have an abortion. Alex and Yasmine flee, phoning their friends for directions to the inn. Tom and Farid give them directions but soon after are brutally attacked by Gilberte, Klaudia, and Goetz. When Tom and Farid try to escape, Goetz runs their car off a cliff. The injured men wander into a mine shaft, where Tom is quickly recaptured. Farid must fend for himself in the mine with the family's rejected children. Unaware of the danger, Alex and Yasmine arrive at the inn and are captured by the family.

Alex and Yasmine are chained in a muddy floored pig pen. Alex breaks Yasmine's chains and allows her to escape. When the captors discover Yasmine's escape, the father of the family, von Geisler, cut Alex's achilles tendons. Meanwhile in the mine, Farid finds the storage area for the victims. The family realizes something is amiss in the mine, and Hans chases Farid into a boiler where Farid is cooked alive. Yasmine flees from the inn but is quickly picked back up by Goetz. Back in the pig pen, von Geisler personally grants Alex's last wish, which is to be put down quickly. Initially, von Geisler wishes for Karl to "wed" Yasmine to carry on the family lineage, but when von Geisler learns she is already pregnant, he entrusts her to the meek Eva. Eva tells Yasmine that she came to the family in a very similar manner and that she is obedient because the family promised her that her parents would return for her some day. Eva also tells Yasmine of the rejected children she and Hans care for in the mine.

Eventually, Eva leads Yasmine down to dinner, where the family awaits her. Von Geisler is revealed to be a former (and still practicing) Nazi. Von Geisler offers up a toast to the new blood and Yasmine quickly grabs a large knife and takes von Geisler hostage. Hans grabs a shotgun and shoots and kills von Geisler in the confusion; Karl shoots Hans dead in turn. Yasmine escapes and is chased by Karl and Goetz into the mine. Yasmine eventually makes her way into one of the body storage rooms where she fights with Goetz. After a bloody struggle, she repeatedly hits him with an axe before impaling him on a rotating table saw. Karl catches Yasmine as she tries to return to the surface, but Eva comes to the rescue, blowing off Karl's head. Yasmine searches for car keys, but is ambushed by Gilberte and Klaudia. During the shootout, Yasmine hits a gas tank, blowing up the room. Gilberte survives the explosion and attempts to kill Yasmine only to have her throat torn out by her. With everyone else dead, Yasmine tries to persuade Eva to leave with her, but Eva stays to take care of the children in the mine. On the road, Yasmine runs into a police blockade where she surrenders to the authorities.

Rate/Review:
7.0/10 Another FearNet onDemand selection. If you like Hostel, you'll like this. The story is entertaining, even if the 'twists' are a bit foreseeable. Another visually well done movie. The political aspect at the beginning is interesting, but has relatively nothing to do with the rest of the film unfortunately. Worth the watch if you're a horror fan with extra time on your hands.

The Avengers

Fuck was this awesome. Actually lived up to the hype and then some. Never was that into The Hulk... but damn, he was AWESOME in this. Loki was amazing too, and Tony Stark is incredible constantly. Thought Captain America was a little "out of his depth" tbh, but he kinda came into his own towards the end when he rallied everyone together to lead an assault on the enemy. Though nothing against Captain America, its just he was there with a giant green smashing machine, a super high tech flying laser blasting Iron Man, and the GOD OF THUNDER. He has a shield .

Re: Rate & Mini-Summarize the Last Movie You Saw

I will be doing mini reviews below. Quite a few.

The Terminator
I really like this film. A cyborg is sent back in time to kill a young woman named Sarah Connor, while a man is sent back to protect her. I really enjoyed this movie, and felt it lived up to the hype that it was given by my dad. Arnie is great in it, and was a really believable Villain.

8/10

Terminator 2: Judgement Day
I liked the first one very much, but i liked this even more. a fantastic action film, and one of the rare films that is better than the first one. 2 cyborgs are sent back in time. 1 to kill the future leader of the resistance, John Connor who is only a kid. And another is sent back to protect him. Arnie plays the hero (if you will) in this one and still puts in a great performance. The t-1000 (the villain) is great.

9/10

Halloween (original)
This is probably my favourite horror/slasher film of all time. Michael Myers kills his older sister when he was a young child. He is locked up in an asylum for 15 years, but he escapes on Halloween and tries to kill a group of teenagers while his doctor searches for him. I love this movie. I highly recommend it to anyone.

10/10

Jaws
Another great film i really, really liked. The story is basically this; A shark terrorises Amnity Island, so 3 men set out to kill the shark.

8.5/10

Dawn of the Dead
Probably my favourite zombie film. 4 people take refuge in a shopping mall during a zombie apocalypse. The graphics may look dated now, but it doesn't take anything away from the film. The acting is good, and i really enjoyed it. When i finished watching it, i was left wanting to watch more, and that's always a good sign. It's about 2 and 1/2 hours long, but i wanted more. Never thought i'd day that.

9/10

Re: Rate & Mini-Summarize the Last Movie You Saw

Hobo with a Shotgun

A hobo (Rutger Hauer) arrives in a lawless town called Hope Town (graffiti sprayed over the word "hope" on the town sign makes it read "Scum Town") via freight train. Scum Town is ruled with an iron fist by The Drake (Brian Downey) and his sadistic, homicidally murderous sons Ivan (Nick Bateman) and Slick (Gregory Smith). Just as he arrives, the Hobo witnesses the execution of The Drake's brother Logan (Robb Wells), who is decapitated at the hands of Ivan and Slick for trying to do some unexplained thing.

The Hobo later visits a pawn shop, where he sees a lawnmower costing $49.99. In order to buy it and start a lawnmowing business, the Hobo starts begging for change on a sidewalk, where he sees Ivan and Slick entering a building. He follows them into an arcade and witnesses them harassing a boy named Otis (Drew O'Hara), who owes them money. A prostitute named Abby (Molly Dunsworth) attempts to stop them. Slick decides to kill her, but the Hobo knocks him unconscious and takes him to the police station in order to turn him in. However, the police chief reveals his corruption and allows Slick to escape. He and Ivan beat the Hobo up and carve the word "scum" into his chest before throwing him into a garbage bin. He runs across Abby who takes him to her apartment, where she tends to his wounds. The next day, the Hobo goes to a local cameraman who pays homeless people to inflict harm upon themselves. Upon completing a series of degrading acts, including chewing glass, he earns enough money to purchase the lawnmower. As he is about to buy the lawnmower, a trio of robbers enter the pawnshop, taking a woman and her baby hostage. The Hobo grabs a shotgun from the shelf to kill the three robbers. Realizing that Hope Town needs justice, he chooses the shotgun – which also costs $49.99 – over the lawnmower, and goes on a rampage, killing dozens of criminals, including the bumfight filmmaker, pimp, coke lord and a pedophile dressed as Santa Claus.

The Drake, infuriated by the positive effect that the Hobo's actions are having on the townspeople, instructs Ivan and Slick to get rid of him. After using a flamethrower on a school bus filled with children in order to remind the citizens of Hope Town that they are to be feared, they burst into a television station during a live news broadcast, kill the anchor (played by George Strombolopolous in a cameo role) and demand that all homeless people be killed, leading to the formation of mobs which start attacking vagrants. One of the mobs hears the Hobo using the shotgun to save Abby from a perverted cop (David Brunt) intending to rape her. The mob starts running towards them, but they are able to make a clever getaway. However, Otis sees them and calls Slick to inform him of the Hobo's location.

As the Hobo and Abby are preparing to leave Hope Town to start a lawnmowing business somewhere else, they are attacked by Ivan and Slick, who seriously wounds Abby before the Hobo is able to force Ivan to flee by threatening to shoot his brother. Once Ivan is gone, the Hobo severs Slick's penis and leave him to die, a torched school bus approach and kill Slick. The Drake hears of this and calls Rip and Grinder (Nick Bateman and Peter Simas), a duo of armour-clad demons known as 'The Plague' (watchful eyes will notice in an arcade earlier in the film, Otis is playing a Double Dragon-style video game about The Plague), to take the Hobo down. The Hobo takes Abby to a hospital, where he is ambushed by The Plague, captured, and taken to The Drake, who intends to execute him in front of the townspeople in order to set an example. Meanwhile, Abby, having recovered, takes the Hobo's shotgun and the lawnmower for use as weapons. She then rallies together a crowd of angry people and leads them to hunt down The Drake.

Abby finds and confronts Drake, Ivan and the Plague. She threatens to kill Ivan with the lawnmower, but the Drake shoots him first, deeming him expendable. In the ensuing fight, Abby releases the Hobo and returns his shotgun to him. She also kills Grinder before The Drake cuts her hand off with the lawnmower. She, however, manages to incapacitate The Drake by stabbing him with her exposed arm bone. Rip then tells Abby that she must join The Plague to replace Grinder, but the Hobo refuses to allow her to do it, and The Plague departs. The Hobo prepares to finish off The Drake, who was trying to crawl away to safety, when the corrupt police arrive. The townspeople decide to take a stand between the Hobo and the police, but the Hobo refuses to have them sacrifice themselves for him and shoots The Drake in the head. The police open fire, killing the Hobo, and are killed by the townspeople in retaliation.

Rate/Review
6.5/10. One of the better splatter/exploitation movies I've seen. Rutger Hauer is terrific in this. I love the camera movement and the suspense building scenes. I know this is one of my shorter reviews, but there's really not a huge plotline. Main character is a hobo, with a shotgun and he goes around taking out the bad guys.

One of my favorite films. Nice review!

Maria Full of Grace

A Columbian movie that I recently watched. As the tagline claims, the movie certainly is based on a '1000 true stories'.

Maria is a poor columbian girl who has to work hard in order to support a large family. One day, she quits her job at a flower shop after a fight with her boss. In addition, she discovers that she is pregnant, which complicates things further.

Somehow, she meets a guy involved in a drug racket, who promises her oodles of money if she could be a mule and smuggle drugs into New York. Its basically the standard procedure of the drug mule swallowing Kgs of Cocaine pellets and holding them in the stomach until the designated location of delivery is reached. Anyways, she agrees to the job as she has no other source of income.

Since she has to swallow 62 pellets, a girl named Lucy (another mule, more experienced one) helps her to practice using grapes and we also hear a backstory at this point. Turns out, Lucy's sister is settled in NY with her husband and Lucy is too ashamed to visit her sister and tell her the nature of her work. In any case, Lucy and Maria bond, and Maria feels she is ready to do the job.

At this point, Maria's best (and rather annoying) friend Blanca also wants in on the act, and she also volunteers to be a mule. So the story now focuses on Lucy, Maria and Blanca who board a flight to NY with Coke in their stomachs.

Obviously, things don't go well. Maria poops during the flight and has to clean the shit from the pellets and reswallow them (the druglord warned her that failure will result in retribution - her family will be killed by the gang). Blanca has periods and struggles holding the drugs in. Lucy is in the worst condition - her pellets have burst inside, and she doesn't feel well - fatal amount of drugs messing with her system.

Somehow the girls evade NY customs, who suspect Maria, but lets her off when they find out that she's pregnant (they can't do scans on pregnant women) and reach the drug dealers in NY. They find out that these guys are ruthless, and the breaking point occurs when Lucy is dying due to the pellets leaking in her system. These drug dealers slit open Lucy's stomach (movie hints that this is done while she is alive) and take out the drugs, killing her as well.

Maria and Blanca, horrified at this, run away with the pellets they have. They seek asylum with Lucy's sister (having obtained the address before from Lucy). However, poverty forces Maria and Blanca to come back and return the pellets to the gang, who forgive her for running away and give her the promised money.

Rest of the movie is about how Maria and Blanca get used to a beggar's life in NY, how they interact with Lucy's sister, how they break the news of Lucy's death to her sister and the final choice they make - whether to stay permanently in NY, or go back to Columbia.

Verdict- 7.5/10. This is by no means a unique story, or even a thrilling one. But it is never boring and you will find yourself drawn into the perspective of Maria. The movie primarily focuses on the innocence of two poor girls, their struggles in an unknown land and the gruesome nature of the drug racket. The ordeal that the three girls (Maria, Blanca and Lucy) undergo during the flight with the pellets in their stomach is the highlight. Overall, its a touching film, with a story that could and is still happening in many parts of the world. Worth a watch.
