The Girl next door

Not to be confused with the Elisha Cuthbert movie of the same name, this is based on a book written about the true story of Sylvia Marie Likens that died in the 1960's in Indiana Now I have a pretty strong stomach for very graphic and disturbing films but this one just leaves you feeling dirty and uneasy after you finish watching it. It's about a group of kids that follow this incredibly evil old lady named "Aunt Ruth" Together they brutally torture and rape this poor 14 year old girl. Now these kids are probably around 12-16 which makes it so creepy. It sickening to think that it's a true story, some of the things they did to her were truly horrific. These are some sick sadistic kids my god... Now the acting is not that great but passable and everything else that makes a movie great isn't really spot on, but the story is so morbid and sad that it makes up for it's shortcomings. I think the point is that evil can exist anywhere, even in the most seemingly pleasant and normal landscapes of suburbia. I don't think I'd really recommend this to anyone, hell I doubt I'll ever want to see this again...But I think it's an important subject to explore. Now the very talented Ellen Page from Juno and Hard Candy stars in the movie "An American Crime" which is about the same story and I believe will be released in a few months. (Could be wrong) I wished I would've waited to see that one instead, now knowing what happened I'm not sure I want to.

Over Her Dead Body- a film about a girl who dies, but her ghost haunts her fiance's girlfriend after her death. Starring Eva Longoria, Paul Rudd, and Jason Biggs. This was a very lame attempt at comedy. Not only did it flunk the box office this week, it was barely entertaining. Paul Rudd should never be given the lead role in my opinion, and Eva Longoria is nothing more than a pretty face, I'm really sorry to say it but she was not the wisest choice for the film. And I just could not get into Lake Bell with her role as Rudd's new gf. The only thing that sort of saved this film was Jason Biggs, the only times I laughed was at the things he did or said. Overall, this is passable.

I just watched this movie just now, and I must say you are very right, its terrible. And I mean that in a sick twisted way, its disturbing. I know this is based on a true story and all, so I hope that Aunt Ruth lady is rotting in hell. I am never this mean to a person, but if you watch the movie, you would wish bad things for her as well. This film is not at all for the weak of heart, it made me sick to my stomach. I kind of regret watching this film, because this is way to intense, even for me. I fucking hate Aunt Ruth with a passion!

Rescue Dawn - 8/10

In 1965, an American Pilot Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale) gets shot down in Vietnam on a classified mission and is put into a Vietnamese prison camp where he along with a few other captives plan their escape, Based on a true story. Not the worlds most entertaining movie but it was very good and really well acted, plus you get to see Bale eat a snake, good times.

Big Trouble In Little China- a film directed by John Carpenter, about a truck driver, who goes on a quest to rescue a green eyed girl from evil sorceries. I was actually shocked to learn this was a John Carpenter film, but thats all the more better. Some of the effects may be cheesy and all, but I thought the film was rather funny, especially Kurt Russell. Its been 22 years since this film was created, but it is never outdated. If you are looking to kill some time, watching this film is a good idea.

Twilight Samurai

This movie is about Seibei Iguchi, a low ranking samurai that leads a life without glory as a bureaucrat in the mid-19 century Japan. Since the illness and subsequent death of his wife, he is left in charge on his 2 loving daughters and senile mother. Before I watched this, I thought this would be your typical Samurai movie with lots of action and bloodshed but what I found was a beautifully weaved story of sacrifice and unspoken love. This movie is truly charming and touching. I believe it's set around the same historical time period as The Last Samurai, but while that movie takes more of an action role, this focuses more on the emotional struggle between personal honor and his duties as a Samurai. Really good movie, a little slow at times but you'll find yourself rooting for Seibei. The acting from Hiroyuki Sanada, who you might remember from the Ringu movies, Sunshine, or of course The Last Samurai, was brilliant as always in his role.

The Last Don

I had read the book, so I was interested to see the film once I discovered they had made one. Almost all of the actors are just terrible, and for anyone who read the book then watched the film, you would never guess that they hired certain people to play certain parts, as most of them didn't seem to fit the part they played.
Lucky there are a couple of good actors (who play main roles, and have also starred in The Godfather films) that helped bring the film from awful to watchable. Add to that the extremely good story based on the book, and you get a somewhat decent mafia film. It has nothing on The Godfather or Goodfellas though, even if I did find the book better.

The Downfall

About the last days of Hitler as he lay waiting to die in his bunker while the Soviet Army was slowly taking over Berlin and their artillery bombarded the city. Possibly one of the best WW2 movies I've ever seen. The realism is spot on, you feel as if you're actually in Berlin 1945. Bruno Ganz who plays Hitler was incredible, he gives the monster a human face, which is very effective. The film's trying to say that the Nazi's weren't some kind of Robotic mythological demons, they were real people that were blinded by ideology and hate. To the films credit I never felt as though it was trying to cram an opinion either way down your throat, it just showed the facts and left it up to the viewer to come up with his/her own conclusions. It's crazy how even when faced with their ultimate failure, his followers still believed and had faith in Hitler's twisted philosophy. One of the most compelling and realistic depictions of war you'll ever see.

The General - Based on the life of Dublin gangster Martin Cahill, who is called the General by his men. This shows his life from several successful robberies in the 1980s until his death at the hands of the IRA in 1994. The film shows Cahill as a simple man who wants to be a father and husband while at the same time a criminal genius one step ahead of the seemingly-inept police. Both Brendan Gleeson (Cahill) and Jon Voight (Inspector Kenny) are good in this film. I saw the film in color, but there is a black-and-white version as well.
