Max Payne (Moore; 2008) - **1/2 (6/10)

A film based on the awesome video games starring Mark Wahlberg (The Departed). While he played the title character as well as it could've been played, the movie is somewhat of a mess. It just doesn't get going until the final act of the movie. Points go to that, and the look of the film which I thought was faithful to the game. And I didn't see the theatrical version, but the unrated version but nothing seems to have been importantly added, with the exception of a few more f-bombs and some blood where it's needed (because a close range shotgun blast to the shoulder deserves some blood, heh).

Re: Rate & Mini-Summarize the Last Movie You Saw

Twister- a film about a couple on the road to divorce, and how they try to get some equipment into a tornado. Starring Bill Paxton (Spy Kids 3D: Game Over), Helen Hunt (Cast Away), and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt). A decent film that has some pretty good scenes when it comes to destruction from the tornado. Hoffman was good entertainment in the roles he had. Don't expect too much, but the film can make for a good way to kill time.

The Unborn

A Young Woman named Casey is tormented by the spirit of her twin brother who died while he was in the womb. When bizarre & unexplainable events start happening, Casey goes in search for answers and learns about how the demonic entity is tied to her family's history. When her friends & family start to feel the wrath of the demon, Casey goes to a Rabbi (Gary Oldman) in hopes that an exorcism can rid her of the spirit.

I just got back from the movie, and I can say that if you are a fan of Horror movies, then you'll probably enjoy this. It has some great scares and if you are watching the movie in a theater full of girls (like I did) then expect alot of screams. And if you've seen the trailers, then you've seen the ghostly looking kid, who is indeed the physical manifestation of the demon. I have no problem with saying this, but children scare me. I don't know why, but if you make a young kid up to look like a ghost or a demon (see Exorcist), then it is just frightening to me.

However, I had a few issues with the plot. Too much time went into explaining where the demon came from, what it is, and all that jazz. I wish this film had taken the route of "Night of the Living Dead" and just don't explain it. I can accept zombies in that movie without any explaining, and I could have easily accept a demon entity in this film without too much exposition. Also, the demon's motives are not entirely clear. At least they weren't to me. I won't give anything away, I'll just say that the ending left me asking questions. Also, Gary Oldman was greatly underutilized in this film. He literally has like 4 scenes in the whole movie, most of them brief.

But at this point I'm just nitpicking. If you're looking for scares, then check this out because there are plenty. The acting overall is good too, at least better than one would expect out this movie. Not the best horror movie ever made, but I don't think anybody was expecting it to be.

Bloody Reunion (2006)

A bunch of classmates return to visit their ailing former teacher. When they start dying the truth comes out.

Pretty good horror with some original death scenes but it's one of those movies with such an unnecessary "Gotcha" ending where everything leading up to the ending is one big lie... For the most part though it's entertaining and turned out to be a decent slasher flick.

Vegas Vacation- a film about the Griswold family, and their trip to Las Vegas. Starring Chevy Chase (Zoom), Beverly D'Angelo (Christmas Vacation), and Randy Quaid (Brokeback Mountain). It may not be a brilliant comedy, but I sure as hell enjoyed it. Loved the whole Vegas atmosphere, and how the vacation played out for the family members. Marisol Nichols (who played Audrey Griswold), was super hot in this film. A good addition to the Vacation series.

National Lampoon's Vacation- a film about Clark Griswold, and his insane family road trip to Wally World. Starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, and Randy Quaid. I really enjoyed this film, its not really for the whole family with the whole language and sex themes. But still very enjoyable, like the rest of the films in the series. I recommend watching this film, because its a classic road trip gone wrong film.

Re: Rate & Mini-Summarize the Last Movie You Saw

The Unborn

A film about a young woman being haunted by the unborn soul of her twin brother and her attempt to exorcise this demon and all that has come along with it.

Firstly I have to give this film alot of credit for creating a very interesting spirit that pulls from mythology, religion, and good old ghost stories and creates on hell of a malicious demon.

The acting is also quite a bit better than most horror films I've seen recently, thanks in large part to the competent lead actress Odette Yustman and Gary Oldman (who I wish had a bigger part) They do a good job of displaying the main character's desperation and desire to be rid of this spirit.

However, she's the only character that truly gets a good deal of development, and when people started dying it was hard to really care much about them, especially at the end of the film. This film also suffers from 'Jump Scare syndrome' which most horror flicks suffer from, rather than setting a creepy tone to run through the film they focus on creating 'jump scares' which rely fully on the sound (rather than the extremely creepy visuals) to deliver the scare.

At times I felt the jump scares had to be there to sort of wake the audience up, this movie had alot of exposition because there was alot you had to know about this ghost.

Overall it's better than most recent horror films but still falls short and left me feeling unfulfilled. Score: 6 1/2 out of 10
