Both the OVA, and the series, follow the Manga's plot. The OVA is just more of a continuance to the Manga.

OVA's are the Japanese version of "Straight to DVD release". So pretty much, they aren't censored. That's why you get more gore.

As far as visually superior, yes. They only had to animate 3 hours opposed to 9.5 hours.

Note: The series is 13 episodes.

Personally, I suggest watching both.

I strongly disliked it when I saw it on AS.

It was boring, confusing and just a overly complex mini series.

Matrix wasn't that great in the first place, IMO.

loved it. well, i loved the two History ones. those two are worth watching it. also the Final Flight of the Osiris is cool, especially since they used Square's "Spirits Within" technology

no spoilers if you have seen the first 4 episode. with that said, apparently Viz is released Vol. 1 DVD next Tuesday which consists of episodes 1-4 all with the original japanese track in tact.

I didn't like the Osiris one. I did enjoy the history one, especially the face squishing. The detective one was my favorite though.
