Bit pissed off at Netflix right now, they're going to cut out allot of anime on their streaming service come Aug 1st. Anything Ghost in the Shell and Macross related are gone, Virus Buster Surge, Strait Jacket, and the Karas Movies will be going too (none of which I had a chance to watch yet)

No word yet if they have any replacement anime, but considering the painfully slow additions, the really bad movies they just added (a Brave and Abraham Lincon Vampire Hunter ripoff... Really) and they haven't even finished up FMA Brotherhood yet, not too hopeful.

Guess I'll be on another "watch these before they get put out to pasture" marathon rush again. Bad enough I almost missed Ip Man.

Damn didn't notice until Hybrid brought it up. It looks like Netflix is losing the licenses to VIZ media and Funimation, Funimation being the source of 95% of dubbed anime. I heard Hulu plus has a lot more anime but some parts are censored and you can't play it on most game consoles.

Not only that, but I heard they tend to only add a few episodes in dub, then the rest subbed. I said it before, subbing is nice n' all, but personally my eyes can no longer handle it on a constant basis.

I don't like this, Netflix was my main source of anime, hell, pretty much the only reason I got Netflix was anime and foreign movies.

Edit: and I just found out they'll be cutting out Soul Eater come Aug 16, dammit!

Then watch subbed anime dammit 80% of good anime goes undubbed anyways :P but fuck this, I got other things to do, like make ready for A TINKERBELL RECOMMENDATION!

Today we will take a look at 2 shows as they are basicalle the same down to a certain degree, with Umineko no Naku Koro ni (When the Seagulls Cry) and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When They Cry) The two of them are basically sister animes or whatever you wanna call it.
Both are based of sound novels (like visual novels they just focus more on the sounds) by the company 07th Expansion. In anime form both are produced by Studio Deen & Frontier Works. Both are essentially murder mystery works but I feel that where Umineko is handling the whole murder mystery thing better than Higurashi does while Higurashi has gotten the horror part down to a T. What is the plot you might be asking yourself right now. We'll let's take a look.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni
Quote:
Umineko no Naku Koro ni takes place on the island of Rokkenjima, owned by the immensely wealthy Ushiromiya family. As customary per year, the entire family is gathering on the island for a conference that discusses the current financial situations of each respective person. Because of the family head's poor health, this year involves the topic of the head of the family’s inheritance and how it will be distributed.

However, the family is unaware that the distribution of his wealth is the least of Ushiromiya Kinzo's (family head) concerns for this year's family conference. After being told that his end was approaching by his longtime friend and physician, Kinzo is desperate to meet his life's true love one last time: the Golden Witch, Beatrice. Having immersed himself in black magic for many of the later years in his life, Kinzo instigates a ceremony to revive his beloved upon his family's arrival on Rokkenjima. Soon after, a violent typhoon traps the family on the island and a string of mysterious murders commence, forcing the eighteen people on the island to fight for their lives in a deadly struggle between fantasy and reality.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Quote:
After moving into the quiet town of Hinamizawa, Maebara Keiichi spends his days blissfully in school often playing games with his local friends. However, appearances can be deceiving. One fateful day, Keiichi stumbles upon news of a murder that had occurred in Hinamizawa. From this point on, horrific events unfold in front of Keiichi, as he soon learns his close friends may not be all that they seem.
Now I discovered both of these shows in 2009/2010 and feels like both of them have changed my view of some anime as both of them got me more interested in the horror type of anime that there is out there.
Now I hear a lot of people around the internet complain that they feel people lied to them and they expected a lot of gore and shit when they were recommended these shows and I'll agree you were lied too if you were told it's as much gory as Elfen Lied (which is still a big shite anime imo) and I would personally never say that this was a gory type of horror shows as I've seen much worse on the gore department. No I'd more describe this as more of psychological horror because the people who has made these shows are masters of setting the mood and changing it from calm and nice to leaving you a fucking nerve wreck the next moment I mean you practically never know when a character from Higurashi is going to snap and you are just sitting there waiting for it and when it finally happens you are still caught off guard like when Keiichi is home alone and gets a visit from one of his friends Rena.

At first it's pretty calm, the suspense builds up until BAM it burst out and shit has hit the fan and you're sitting there getting a little cold sweat from the tension. Now Umineko also has this down a bit though I still feel that Higurashi definately is the more intense horror to watch while Umineko is the more supernatural murder mystery stuff maybe a tad bit more gory that Higurashi, but they still manage to shock you and have characters suddenly snap or act a bit wacko, like Rosa here who may need a bit help in handling her child Maria.

The animation in both shows are nice escpecially when shit hits the fan and you can see panic/and or madness written all over a persons face, the sound is also nice it also really help set the mood when you got suspenseful music playing in the background or the silence before something dramatic happens. The story, I must say that I like the story in Higurashi more than Umineko, both are basically some arcs lasting a couple of episodes before going on to the next arc where you are bound to see more crazyness, don't panic if things start to get a little repetitive as it'll all make sense (at least it did to me). Now as said before Umineko tend to be more gory imo and with more supernatural? deaths while Higurashi goes for the more plausible but less gory deaths imo but it's all explained why that is so supernatural in Umineko.
So I'll wrap this up and leave it all at that and hope that it has helped get all of you interested in the two shows at least interested enough to try and check them out as I feel they should really be known by more people maybe they are not the greatest of animes that there are but for me they hold a special place in my heart as they were the two first real horror animes that I laid my eyes upon, if I made no sense I apologize I have a habbit of not making sense.

Soul Eater was a fun series. Wished they had followed the manga instead of creating an ending.

Considering the manga hasn't ended (though does seem to be nearing conclusion) I can't complain, especially since I felt it wasn't at all a bad ending, a tad lackluster admittedly, but not bad.

Wouldn't mind if they pulled a brotherhood though.

Is anyone in here into "Bastard!!"? Just got done watching the OVA's (only six episodes ) and getting started to read volume 3 of the manga.

Dark Schneider is one of the most badass characters ever created. Sleeps with thousands of women, most powerful sorcerer in the world, son of Satan, & rips his heart out and survives.

I've seen scans of him where every part of his body is ripped apart and his head is the only thing left and still manages to beat the shit out of his opponent. Talk about overpowered hax abilities.

Bastard is a decent OVA series. I used to get it confused with Devilman.

Yup, the same. After seeing a couple of episodes of Naruto and Bleach, I was kinda at a point where I said fuck Shonen Jump.

Sad, I always thought Op was the better of those 3, has that whimsical world feel that Dragonball had.
