I wouldn't say Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Umineko no Naku Koro ni or Another :P are cutsie either, more like psychological horror or something like that, there is some blood, but not like it's a slasher show, they shows just put up this tension that just gives you the creeps, that and you never know when a character will snap and go fucking crazy.

The dying cat is probably in the OVA's, but since I haven't seen in a long time I can't say. I just remember how dark that show is.
Eh, Higurashi, I never cared for, murderous moe characters isn't scary or fun.
Evangelion is one I forgot to mention. I've heard The tv series and End of Evangelion really put people into depression. That never happen to me though  , although I think it's a great psychological series.
Oh, Rei Ayanami ftw.

Finally finished Black Lagoon, the ending was decent at best, but overall i enjoyed it. Looking forward to the third season which focuses on Roberta, it's getting dubbed this year yay!

i feel like a rookie coming in here. Only anime ive ever read or watch was YuYu Hakusho, One Piece and Naruto. And only one i keep up with now is Naruto.

The more, the better. Recommend Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Outlaw Star for you. All three personify anime in great light.
Oh, forgot I just finished Spice and Wolf season 1. Pretty damn good. Holo has to be one of best written female characters to come out from anime in quite so time.
