Re: Anime Discussion Thread
Honestly, I don't mind a US version of Death Note. THAT could actually work.
Anyways, finished El Hazard: The Magnificent World awhile ago and what a magnificent world it was. Here's a brief synopsis: The story focuses on four people from Earth. Three high school students Makoto Mizuhara, Katsuhiko Jinnai and Nanami Jinnai, and the History teacher Masamichi Fujisawa are mysteriously transported to the fantastical world of El-Hazard. El-Hazard is threatened by a possible war between the human nations and the insectoid Bugrom tribe. (source: Wikipedia)
One thing I have to give HUGE props to the art director for is the world he has created for this series, really unique. I have say that this one world I wouldn't mind exploring myself. Really beautiful backgrounds and architectures of the buildings and landscapes. Some of best backgrounds I have, even rivaling those of Tenchi Muyo. The animation is pretty damn good for OVA series. The character designs are very similar to those of Tenchi Muyo. People have often compared and measured the characters of El Hazard to those of Muyo, some of which have somewhat similar backgrounds and personalities. My favorite characters would have to be Mr. Fujisawa and Jinnai.
Being a series that was produced by the same studio that is known for creating the "originator" of the harem genre, Tenchi Muyo. El Hazard has been known as the younger brother to the epic series, but El Hazard deserves as praise as Tenchi for creating an unique anime genre.
I'll be honest, I kinda like El Hazard more than Tenchi. One of reasons this is so is because not every female character is love with the male lead. Another reason is that the male lead actually is interested in ONE female character. El Hazard has two male characters who are very personable and have their love interests.
One negative I have to put down on the series is the series protagonist, Makoto Mizuhara. He, himself, is kind of a boring a character. He doesn't stand out like Jinnai and Fujisawa. He really is the Tenchi of this series, which is an archetype of the harem genre. Although he is more likable than most harem leads.
Overall, if you ever thought about watching any harem anime, this should be on the top of the list. I'm definitely checking out the tv series. 9/10
