As far as a number review goes, I would say eight out of ten.
As far as a synopsis goes:
In a district in Tokyo named Ikebukuro there lies both very human
matters and a few Supernatural matters/characters. The beginning of the series can be a bit confusing and can even seem to not make any points at certain times, but that quickly progresses. There are a multiple character obsession with a 'fish tank' like jar that holds the head of what could possibly be a Valkyrie, but logically, with all heads come a body and unbeknownst to a few of the obsessed the rest of the body exists. As a matter of fact the 'Black Rider' inhabits the district of Ikebukuro.
The person most obsessed with the head, Izaya Orihara, is a 'information broker' of sorts. This character is what the story hinges on. Not only does he ponder the possibilities of the head, but he tells a tale of 'Saika' a blade that once it cuts someone that person is forever under the control of the blade. Izaya has a fascination with human behaviour and tends to purposely put people in predicaments just to see the outcome.
Ikebukuro is home to many gangs, most with affiliations to a certain colour, for instance: The Yellow Scarfs and The Blue Squares. These 'gangs' mostly thrive on fighting and piety crimes. But for some other people who use the 'web' to communicate and treat it as almost a separate reality there exists a group called the 'Dollars'. The 'Dollars' don't affiliate with any specific colour and as a matter of fact most of their members are unknown to the public and even amongst themselves. Their creator and/or leader are both kept a perfect secret. The Dollars, unlike the other gangs, communicate in chat rooms.
There are many side plots, they may or may not intertwine. The moment you think they are going to, they don't and the most obvious do the opposite.
My recommendation, give the first 7-10 episodes a try. After that you will either be craving more or you will being hanging it up.
Personally, I really enjoy the unique storyline and the surprises. I would give more of a synopsis, but I believe I may have spoiled a bit too much already. I hope this helps you out Honehiem. And as for the lack of quality of this post, it is 2:30 in the morning and I am rather tired.
