Dragonball was brilliant, mainly because people weren't so damn serious back then.
Goku was off-the-scales brilliant in beating everyone up just because they messed with his pals (and having the most hunger-inducing eating scenes in history in the process) while Roshi and his excercise videos were beyond legendary.
I mean where else are you gonna get characters like Oolong or Yajirobe or a villain with the awesomeness of Emperor Pilaf?
And it delivered on the serious stuff too: I think i've mentioned before how amazingly well done i thought Krillin's death was at the end of whichever number tournament it was by the - unknown then - Piccolo, and Goku v. Tien at the final is probably the best fight of the series for me.
Z started off nice and it had a lot of good points and great characters, but it just got to the point where people where so strong it was just ridiculous. Plus, there's only so many episodes of people staring at each other and powering up you can take.
It's very interesting to think about how - as Blasko said - while it was Z that really multiplied the fame and popularity of anime, it was
really Dragonball that most people started with and then stuck to Z and most admit to it being the better series in terms of the anime alone.
It'd be interesting to hear from someone who's gone through the whole manga where i believe there is no distiction between original and Z, whether the pace changes as significantly as it does for the anime or if it's a more gradual transition, and how Z feels without the endless stalling.
