Re: Anime Discussion Thread

I finally got round to watching Fullmetal Alchemist.

Gone through 20 or so eps, and i must say i'm well impressed...first ep. really threw me a bit off balance with the cute-ish animation and themes and then - bam - things go wrong and there's limbs flying and that thing you only get a glimpse of but still realise what it was and it freaks you out...awesome stuff.

There's some killer humour, good action and some very nice themes going on with "side-stories" thrown in along for the ride.
Again, i love how it's not afraid to go all Elfen Lied on our ass at times with people dieing and that bad guy who does that thing.
It's really not something you would expect from the overall feel of the series - the humour, the traveling format etc - but it really helps set the tone for the state of mind of the main characters and makes the series pop out from the rest of the pack.

Awesome stuff, can't wait to finish it!

Spoiler for This bit shook me the most:
When their host/trainer uses his daughter and his dog to make a chimera that Scar then proceeds to kill by exploding from the inside out...especially the first part had me literaly going "Oh shit..."

You're going to learn this as you go further and further into the series. FMA's rather notorious (in a positive sense) of the "Chimera as a scientific magic based fusion" mind set. They're one of the few that love to throw in a man-beast into the battle and go "hey! we got a story for it too! Enjoy!." In fact, the only other Chimera Fusion mind set I can recall is Slayers, and that was a rather quick mention.

It should also probably be noted that FMA is one of the few anime that goes in such a different direction that its Manga counterpart, that it could be considered an alternate universe, if not a completely different story, but nooooobody complains about it. Granted the main reason for this is because Bones did a great job with the story, but even so, those hardcore manga whiners shut up and enjoy the show.

Re: Anime Discussion Thread

Right, my hard drive filled up - again - last night so it was time for some serious archiving and i figured i'd finish up the last few episodes of Azumanga Daioh before throwing them on DVD given that i couldn't be arsed to revise for exams.
(last few episodes btw were, ironically, centred around the girls not being arsed to revise for exams...)

I'd forgotten quite how brilliantly bat-shit crazy the humour is and i couldn't stop myself laughing for most of it.
The characters are so well thought out and the dynamics between them are spot-on with Osaka being a true classic.
There's only one thing i hate about this series tbh.

When you watch it, it slowly dawns on you that no matter what you do in life, you'll never meet anyone quite as full of AWESOME and EPIC and WIN as Yukari-sensei.
I mean the woman is a F'N legend...

Back to FMA within the weekend hopefully

Re: Anime Discussion Thread

Spoiler for FMA:
My favorite part of the series is the Warehouse 5 thing. Complete awesomeness. The whole Dante/Greed saga is also pretty exciting

Re: Anime Discussion Thread

If you get a chance, get your hands on the FMA mangas. I enjoyed them more then the actual episodes.

Who cares?

Re: Anime Discussion Thread

I have to agree with Invincible. Warehouse 5 was pretty damn intense.

I've been watching School Rumble and I have to say it's pretty damn good, and addicting as well. The characters are pretty relatable and I like the situational comedy that they have put in as well.

I got the first two. Both are really good, but these volumes haven't strayed too far from the anime yet (aside from Episode/Chapter Timeline)

Re: Anime Discussion Thread

I couldn't sleep last night, and I ended up watching Adult Swim's Anime Block for the first time in a few years.

I forgot how much Big O appeared to suck, but really didn't. Memories.....
