I agree with this for one Simple reason...

I started with Death Note...

Well I'd saw Akira and owned all the studio Ghibli stuff, but for my first real Anime TV show I went into Death Note just because the premise intrigued me...

And now it's my favourite TV show of all time

I'm currently watching the romance Of The Three Kingdoms from the Early 90s, I'm enjoying it quite a lot, although that might just be because of my love for the books... The one dissapointing thing is it was cancelled before it was finished....

EDIT:

Looks interesting. I checked out the trailer on youtube and the art style reminds me of Bleach...but with gangsters...and not as lame.
I've saw the first 3-ish episodes and it is rather good...

Only a true Otaku would speak such words. But seriously, its so true. I was a full fledged Anime nut before Death Note was brought to my attention. I really do think some series that I have attempted to watch would grab my interest a bit more if it wasn't for the greatness known as Yagami Light.

It's true.
Once you see Light and L own each other with twist and counter-twists, bluffs and double-bluffs, everything else pales...

The OVA series. It's interesting you said that, as I was particularly wondering about looking over the new series as of late and seeing if that would measure up to it or be any better.

Cowboy Bebop or Trigun are the perfect "starter" shows

Yeah actually those are better to start with than FMA. They're not as long.

Try Fullmetal Alchemist. It's how I got started.
I will agree not to start with Death Note, however, it'd be for the opposite reason. If I seen Death Note as my first Anime, I'm pretty sure my outlook on Anime would be fairly bleak. Death Note's plot annoyed me to no end, I saw just about each and every move Light and L were trying to pull on one another.

So glad they didn't continue the series an made it as long as the Manga.

There's way too many options to start with.

Pushing the long list below aside, right off the top of my head I'll suggest Tenchi Muyo, Outlaw Star or Gundam Wing. They're not the first Anime I seen, but they're the ones that cemented my fascination with Anime.

If you want to start somewhere like I did, you're gonna have to go old school. Sometime around the 80s to early-mid 90s Anime. All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku, Dirty Pair Flash, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 (which Wikipedia is saying was released in 1998-'99... BULLSHIT) just to name a few.

Now, if you're going for anime you can just find on the TV, your choices are fairly limited. Independent Film Channel has Hell Girl, Sci-fi's current Anime series is Gundam 00. The rest are on Cartoon Network. When it comes to CN, the only time they show the good anime these days are very late at night, and only on Saturdays. So if you're lucky, you can catch Moribito, Full Metal Alchemist or Cowboy Bebop on that night.

If you want to start with Anime Movies, there's actually a good number of them out there. If you find any of Hayao Miyazaki's work, GET IT. Porco Rosso, Spirited Away, Nausica of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, etc. (too many to count.) However, when it comes to Nausica, be very careful not to get the Wind Warriors, that's a heavily butchered version of the movie that almost made sure no other Miyazaki film would touch foreign soil. Akira is another great movie as well as Steamboy. You can also try the Appleseed movies which if my math is right, there are three.
