Supernatural Season 10

The ninth season of Supernatural ended on one of the biggest game-changers in the show's history, with Dean Winchester being transformed into a demon. Here's everything fans need to know about the tenth season of Supernatural:

Here at Digital Spy, we're as desperate as any other fan to find out how this dark twist is going to affect the show going forward, and at Comic-Con last month we sat down with showrunner Jeremy Carver. Below are the key things we learned from Carver, and actors Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins.

Sam will eat his words

Remember the painful scene last season where a justifiably angry Sam threw Dean's loyalty back in his face, and more or less betrayed the whole mission statement of the show? In that scene, Sam said he wouldn't go as far to save Dean as Dean went for him, but according to Padalecki, this season is going to prove what an empty sentiment that was.

"He was lying to Dean because he was hurt," Padalecki said of the scene that broke a thousand fans' hearts. "That was Sam's way of saying, 'Buddy, you hurt me, you lied to me and let me get possessed by an angel'. So this season, we do see how far Sam's willing to go, and that he is willing to go outrageously far [to save Dean]."

You can probably expect some friction between Sam and Castiel, who's taking a more grimly pragmatic approach to the Dean situation. "Castiel wants to get the old Dean back, but he's also determined to get rid of demon Dean, whatever that takes," Collins revealed. "If that means there's no choice but to kill Dean, Castiel is willing to go there."

It's going to be a lonely season

At least initially, it sounds as though the newly demonic Dean will be cut off from those closest to him, while bonding with Crowley. "It's really kind of solo flying for demon Dean, and it's kind of sad," Ackles revealed. "He's like the guy at the party who just keeps drinking and making an ass of himself, and he doesn't care that his friends have all left and the music's died. It's sad, but it's also a little scary, because of what he's capable of. Out of three days of filming last week, I was in four fights."

Ackles summed up demon Dean as "a lot of physicality, a lot of booze, a lot of babes". Everything you'd expect from Dean, in other words, only without the soul and the persistent self-doubt.

There will be karaoke

Evil karaoke, to be specific. In addition to excessive violence and a sociopathic lack of emotion, demon Dean also makes his douchery known via the medium of song. "The songs that he picks are songs that he knows will piss the crowd off," Ackles smiled. "He doesn't care, and if they don't like it, all the more reason to sing it." Yep. Demon Dean is totally that guy. Ackles wouldn't be drawn on the question of whether his repertoire would include 'Lady In Red'.

Castiel is ready to die

Castiel's grace is still fading, and according to Collins he's not too worried about finding a solution. "Cas has developed a somewhat fatalistic perspective on life - he feels like he's doomed," the actor explained. "The only solutions he has are to get Metatron's co-operation, which he's too prideful to do, or to slit an angel's throat and steal its grace, and he doesn't want to kill any more angels. So he's somewhat resigned to his own expiration."

The 200th episode is a semi-musical

The fifth episode of season 10 will be the show's bicentennial, and what better way to celebrate than with a song and dance number? While this doesn't sound like a fully-blown musical in the vein of Buffy's 'Once More With Feeling', Carver describes the episode as "musical-ish", adding: "It's very much Supernatural's own spin and beyond the songs, it's very much what we consider to be a love letter to the fans."

A long-awaited character debut is on the cards

While he wouldn't be drawn on specifics, Carver said that several familiar faces will return in the new season, and that we'll also get to meet at least one "character who has been spoken of but never seen over the ten years".

Carver did reveal that Sheriff Donna Hanscum (Brianna Buckmaster) from last season's 'The Purge' would make a return, teaming up with Sheriff Mills (Kim Rhodes) in an episode he describes as "our version of The Heat".

Castiel and Crowley have their own arcs

With Misha Collins returning as a series regular and Mark Sheppard newly promoted as one, both Castiel and Crowley will strike out on their own for at least some portion of the new season.

"I know there are varied opinions on this, but Castiel and Crowley are so much a part of the family that they can really hold their own stories," Carver explained. "But ultimately the universe revolves around these two brothers, so those storylines will always tie in. There has to be room for Cas and Crowley to go out and have their own experiences."

This time it's personal

The mythology of season ten will be rooted in character, and will be "personal, rather than quest-oriented", according to Carver. "If last year was certain people having to decide who they wanted to be, this season has them saying, 'I am who I am'. And that may be a very good or a very bad thing - there's going to be a certain reckoning that comes from that."

Supernatural season 10 will premiere on the CW on October 7.

Re: Supernatural Season 10

One of my favorite things about Supernatural has always been the 'filler' episodes. They always do a good job of lightening the mood in between the really, really heavy ones, without being too corny. Although with Dean (at least initially) as a demon, I don't see how that will happen. I hope it's not too dark for too long, or it won't feel the same.

(I'll still be watching it anyways, even if it is)

Call Kenny Loggins. Cause you're in the Danger Zone.

Re: Supernatural Season 10

I watched this show since the beginning too. I can't believe it made it to ten seasons. Sure the quality of the show went down after season 5, but it began to pick up steam again after season 7. Believe it or not I think Supernatural can go on for 5 more years. It's so much more stuff they can do. It's rumors of God appearing in the 200th milestone episode. Should be pretty good.

Of course more girls to the show is good. I have my doubts with that musical episode I've always hated those type of things in any tv show/movie.

Supernatural needs to end at some point I just don't see 5 more seasons of the show. I think 2/3 seasons more will be enough.

Musicals are the single most retarded thing to ever be put on film. Every person ever who has contributed to or taken part in a musical should be put to death. We'd be doing evolution a favor.

Yeah having a Musical in the course of a series is pretty fucking awful. Every time.
