The Maguire movies were absolute shit imo, even the well praised second one. How was he even a good Peter Parker? Because NERD?

Actually, yeah. I look at it like this way: If you pointed out Maguire to me and said, "You know that guy's Spider-Man, right," I'd laugh in your face, not a chance I'd believe that. Point out Garfield (especially in the first movie) and ask the same question, and I'd say, "You might have a point there..." Maguire was a terrible Spidey, he wasn't funny, unnecessarily dramatic and angsty, and just gave off "lame" vibes all-around. However, those qualities are exactly why he's a great Peter Parker. Spidey's always been an interesting character to portray for me, because unlike Superman and Batman, his civilian identity isn't a complete afterthought, Parker has his own set of mannerisms and qualities that are almost completely different from Spidey's.

(For the record, even though Spidey's my favorite hero by far, he hasn't had an "above average" movie for me yet, all of them suffer from various problems. 3 is the absolute worst, but none of the others are standouts either, especially when put up against the stuff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.)

I did laugh at the notion of Maguire being Spiderman so yeah, fair I guess. Don't agree that he's a better Peter Parker tho.

Spiderman 3 came bundled with my George Foreman Grill-sized PS3 in 2007. I still haven't taken it out of the plastic. ..... (how much would I get on Kijiji?)

Re: Amazing Spider-Man 2 is awful

My sister got to see the movie in an advanced screening.

She is a HUGE Spider-Man fan. She loves Spidey more than anyone else on this board loves wrestling. I am dead serious. It is almost like a religion to her.

Her thoughts on the previous films were that she LOVED the 1st two Raimi films, was disappointed by the third, and absolutely despised the reboot.

She called me and basically spoiled the entire movie for me because I didn't really care. I wasn't going to go see it anyway.

Here is what she told me:

- For her, the worst part about the movie were the villains. She couldn't stand Harry (she said he over enunciated all of his lines to the point of being annoying), Electro's origin didn't do it for her, Chris Cooper was completely wasted as Norman, & she felt none of the villains got enough screen time to really get fleshed out. Her exact line to me was that if you've seen the trailers, you've basically seen most of the stuff with the bad guys. For whatever reason, she can't stand Paul Giomatti at all, so Rhino just bugged her on principle. She also said the dialogue was pretty terrible too.
- She couldn't stand the fact that Uncle Ben was pushed to the background and Peter seem more upset over Captain Stacey and his parents. I agree with her on that one because in the last one it felt like Uncle Ben had almost no impact on anything and that completely goes against Spider-Man's motivations. She also felt, and I agree, that it is pointless to include Peter's parents in his story if you can't use SHIELD.
- She said as Peter Parker, Garfield was annoying. In the last film, I thought he was kind of a douchebag, but she said that the problem here was that they made him a stereotypical New Yorker with a bad accent. Confirmation on this?
- She also said that the story was a bit of a mess, parts of it felt rushed, and it jumped all over the place. She also hated all the "Easter Eggs" that they crammed in there to hype up a sequel (and yes, she told me what they were).
- The only things about the movie she liked were Garfield as Spider-Man, some of the action, and the big emotional moment at the end which I won't spoil. She said when Garfield was in the suit, it was classic Spidey and she loved it.

To sum it up, she said as a movie, it was probably of lesser quality than the last one, but it pissed her off less, so six in one, half a dozen in the other.

Thoughts? How on point is she?

Re: Amazing Spider-Man 2 is awful

Very not on point as she seems to like Raimi's horrible Spiderman trilogy.

There's really only Electro with Goblin and Rhino just there to set up the next movie. Having said that, the trailers did give most of it away.

Cap'n Stacey's death is more relevant in the context of the story. Also, Uncle Ben's death led to Peter BECOMING SPIDERMAN. lel

Garfield as Peter Parker is awesome. Maybe I'm overrating this b/c I absolutely hated what Maguire did to the character.

The rush is definitely there, but the movie is quite long and they probably couldn't help the pacing.

Finally, I don't think you'll like the movie (owing to what little I know of your tastes from opinions on this board), but I'd suggest a watch just b/c the 3D is incredible.

Re: Amazing Spider-Man 2 is awful

As a huge spidey mark. I'm pissed off at how okay these last two films are. Nothing offensive, but nothing captivating. These movies are so by the numbers in how they're made and feel small compared to great shit like Cap 2.

Toby Maguire is a waaaaaay better Peter Parker then Andrew Garfield. More sympathetic, more relatable, and more nerdy.

Re: Amazing Spider-Man 2 is awful

Femto, what's your opinion on Ultimate Spider-Man? (The comic, not the show). I've heard many people compare Garfield's portrayal of Peter to that one.

And I do have to praise the reboot for one thing: The visuals. They nailed the general "feel" of Spidey's New York in a way that the Maguire trilogy couldn't even hope to do. The colors, the lighting...it just captures Spidey's universe so well. Whatever issues I may have with the reboot, I must say that they got the look of it 100% right.
