Thread for everyone to reside in. Ask any questions about the league in here, hype debates and make tits out of yourselves before you get embarrassed in debates by the big boys.

Just a minor announcement with good news. TLK is alive and tells me to give everyone in TDL his best.

I told him that Headliner / Seabs / Anark / WOOLCOCK / Andre had all asked about him at some point or another fairly recently, and he said he misses you all. He's not back on the forum or anything, but thought I'd give an update about our FRIEND.

Also, :dirk :tlk  :hb

Cheers GUYS! ;D

Aha if some of you saw I posted a suggestion about bringing The Debate Leauge, was this one of the reasons why this was brought back via the topic discussion which led to this. If so, cheers guys.

I really wanted to be a part of a Debate leauge like I have in the past, and for people wondering I went to the suggestions:

http://www.wrestlingforum.com/suggestions-help/764154-debate-section.html

Only reason I ask is because I read it has been gone four years, so I was curious as if to my suggestion brought up the suggestion to bring it back - if so thats great, and cheers for bringing it back so we can all have fun and DEBATE! ;D

Eh I know when you're available and for what. Those like TLK, ZOMBO and Headliner who are on a show by show basis don't need to worry about, it's more for people I don't chat to a lot on here. I'll keep it in the OP so if someone does sign for a certain amount of time thinking they'll be automatically signed back in after, they know if I have them down as signed in or out and can PM me if they're in when they're listed as being out.

He thinks we should all conform to his standards because he knows what is best
I want to touch on this, in regards to Tater's comments about Andre's judging guidelines.

Firstly let it be known this was anything but a guideline forced upon all judges to review and memorise off by heart, before judging a debate. Failure to adhere to the guidelines did not result in a judge being canned, or Andre kicking off. In fact Seabs first sent the guideline out with Andre not even knowing, and ZOMBO sharing it publicly again was of his own volition.

The guideline was a general 'checklist' of what judges could look for when considering a decision. This was a purely general overview of what a reasonably competent judge can perceive to be essential in a winning debate:

1) Answering the question - THE ABSOLUTE KEY COMPONENT
You can write the best debate in TDL but if it answers a separate question to what you were asked, you're not winning shit. 'Freedom to interpret the question as you wish' means you can debate for either side, no debater is expected to only choose one side. They have absolute freedom to argue YES/NO depending on the arguments they construct and their confidence to form a winning debate. It doesn't mean you can ignore the subject question, write 1000 words on something that at best loosely connects to the question, and expect to win. There's a fundamental difference and continuing to see it as 'judges just not understanding your approach' won't cut it. If you ignore key aspects of a question, it's a massive own goal. If a debate asks you to consider crime in America, you can draw on other countries for comparison but if you barely focus on America in the debate....you're going to likely lose barring a horrific entry from your competitor. Any component of a question bares direct relevance to what should be included in the debate, otherwise questions would be entirely ambiguous.

2) Stats - and how they can be deceiving
It's easy on paper to see a stat and find it convincing, Andre's guideline actually set an alarm bell off in my head to not just dismiss the raw number as accurate and leave it be. It alerted to me to possible manipulation/deceiving figures, especially regarding Football debates centred on goals/assists. The Remy debate by Seabs and Rush I think is a great example of how both debaters used stats wisely to demonstrate how Remy was the better transfer, but it means people can't use stats without submitting a reference to back up their argument. It strengthens arguments, which produces overall stronger debates, ergo improving the quality of an average debate and improving standards. No judge wants to be given 5 DUD matches to write about, especially if persistent offenders are making basic errors that indicate past feedback has fallen on deaf ears.

3) The old 'great writing vs factual arguments' adage
People like Andre, TLK and DDMac in particular mix great arguments with their personality. Their debates aren't wooden and rigid, they have flow, humour, range and capture your attention, either through presentation, deliberate spacing between arguments, bolding key words for emphasis etc. Point being, their great arguments capture your attention and become convincing, but it's also important to allow judges to not be blinded by 'the most entertaining debate', especially if it's not the best debate in terms of answering the question/producing consistent arguments of sufficient quality. Again, people new to judging can easily be engaged by a well written debate, but Andre's guideline again is a key indicator of how 'presentation' or 'how entertaining a debate was' should only be a barometer for the winning debate if the core criteria is matched by two or more debates. ZOMBO himself will tell you he PM'd other judges prior to the all tag show, because he had never judged a tag debate before and was seeking clarification on whether he was judging individual debates as one effort, or judging two debates as basically half a debate each. Basically, was he looking at 1600 vs 1600, or 4 800 word debates and which two tallied together were the best.

Andre's criteria wasn't anything that wasn't explained to judges when TDL was first brought back, nor did it contain anything that a reasonably competent judge likely didn't already know. What it did do however was serve as a handy device in the event judges were stuck on a winner (I can attest to this when Seabs vs EC on the Carlos Colon debate for Captain Wars II was the toughest debate I have ever had to assign a winner to), and ensures judges go out of their way to EXPLAIN their decisions. This was the key aspect of Andre's friendly and helpful guideline, that judges should ALWAYS make clear why they arrived at their decision, which assists debaters in where they went right/wrong, and how they can improve. This is an essential tool when the aim for everyone here is to improve, even if it's a friendly and non-serious competition.

Now Tater, you might say this was all sarcasm and you 'being in on it', but I frankly don't believe it. Based on a number of comments I've observed from you, you strike me as someone who loves the sound of their own voice and will argue anything for the sake of arguing, when you believe yourself to be in the right. I could not have pinpointed the reasons I picked Clique's debate over yours in the 'Can Opinions on Film/Art be wrong on an absolute level', yet I have seen countless comments since by you regarding 'wishy washy judging' where you label past losses as nothing more than judges like myself 'not getting it'. Frankly, that's a crock and again I find it evident of your ego and refusal to be wrong. Your past rant on imposing schedules on judging, when you've in the past been a keen advocate of not imposing deadlines, just re-affirmed to me that you were probably bored on that particular evening and wanted to do something you found fun: so you bickered senselessly even after countless others clarified why it wouldn't work, and all so 'people can discuss it openly'. The hilarious nature of this is that TDL is COMPLETELY FUCKING OPEN FOR DISCUSSION. People like ZOMBO, Anark, Hanoi and Aid180 have become judges based on their significant improvement as debaters, displaying they have the required input and awareness of how to construct great debates, the social division has seen a merger with music and television topics, having previously been a purely politics/philosophy/key human issues division. Any debater is free to suggest topics to Seabs/TLK/Andre that they think could be worthy of being added to a card, it's as transparent a system as you will find on here.

Rant over because personally I find most of your whinging to be a real ballache in what is otherwise the most consistently fun area of the forum for me personally. I can spot when people like Andre and ZOMBO are taking the George Michael, you however I'm not convinced for one moment are part of the plan, and rather are just openly communicating to people how obnoxious and argumentative you are when your viewpoint is challenged.
