TOE TO TOE WITH TLK: FEATURING THE MOTHERFUCKIN' COMMISH
Welcome, everyone, to a very special edition of TOE TO TOE. TLK here, as usual, to talk a bunch of nonsense with people I've never met before. In tonight's installment of T2T, we look to celebrate the one year anniversary of Wrestling Forum's second (and much more successful) iteration of The Debate League, and what better way to sing TDL's praises than with the man responsible for it all: The Mark Cuban of TDL....Seabs!
SEABS GOES TOE TO TOE WITH TLK
TLK: Holy shit, you're not a female.
TLK: Well, better scratch my script. :bron3
Seabs: You gonna ask me any fuckin' questions or just throw smilies my way? And WTF is on your teleprompter? I can't decipher a single word.
TLK: Dammit, CGS! You had one job. Just load the damn backup script already. Please don't try to type it up yourself. :StephenA2
OK, looks as though CGS was able to settle the technical difficulties, so on with the show we go!
We'll start with some general League questions. TDL is now one year old. Did you foresee this happening when you, me and Isaac were merely getting the ball rolling at this time last year? Is it going better, worse or as planned relative to your expectations?
Seabs: Getting past 10 shows was the aim at the start tbh. Getting a full year out of it with it only getting better and nowhere near stale is way better than I would have predicted.
For how long do you see TDL running strong? What potential factors could jeopardize this and how are you looking to mitigate them?
Seabs: Like I said just getting to a year with this much momentum surpassed my original expectation. The fact that we seem to constantly have new debaters rising up even through improvement such as Anark or freshly signing up such as Rigby and pinkandblack makes me more hopeful that this won't get stale for a while to come. Obviously if there's just 5 great debaters and nobody else steps up then it will get stale after a while but there's always been exciting debates over the course of the first year with the high volume of seriously great debaters we managed to attract on top of others really stepping up to that level over time. So yeah really Year 2 should be every bit as strong as long as people stick around.
My biggest concern in terms of longevity is running through all the marquee topics straight away. Wrestling is so broad and always developing that's it less of an issue with that division but more so for Social and Sports I think. With Sports there's really only so many UK vs US topics you can think of which is why I try to limit them rather than running through one per show and using up all the good topics within a year. I don't even know where I'll be in terms of important real life stuff in 6 months time let alone TDL but as long as the debaters are here then so will TDL imo because it's really them that make this work. Obviously I'm a big part of it (:cheese) but this idea sucks without the likes of Andre, WOOLCOCK and ZOMBO producing quality debaters show after show.
TLK: I've been MIA for weeks so I really don't know who Rigby and/or pinkandblack are so I'll just have to take your word for it. The success of the League really is a true testament to the quality across the rosters and the passion shown by debaters of all shapes, sizes and statuses.
Okay, a fun, quick series of questions, which I'd like to call 'Seabs' Personal TDL Awards." First, other than you, who is TDL's MVP?
Seabs: This will sound like a cop out answer but it's honestly anyone who has been contributing over the year. Whether it's Andre banging out brilliant debates every show, you and ZOMBO helping out with other ideas such as Toe 2 Toe and The Profile Series, anyone who has ever judged a debate, Anark talking nonsense and filling up the time in between results or just guys like Klunderbunker who constantly offer up debates even if they aren't at an elite level. It'd be really easy for them guys to just not partake but them trying to improve and move up the ranks like CGS and Anark did is a large part of TDL's charm imo. Everyone has a role in TDL and it wouldn't be half as fun if it was just the 10 best debaters debating each other on 5 match cards every month.
TLK: All I heard was MichaelDD.
Seabs: Andre. Can't say anyone else in fear of it setting him off on a thread clicking rampage and then bragging about the buyratesthread views he draws.
Biggest overachiever/surprise? (Basically someone you thought would suck but has turned out well)
Seabs: Gotta be ZOMBO. Don't think anyone knew who he was before TDL so I just assumed he was some geek and originally left him out of the inaugural Wrestling Division Championship Tournament until Cody dropped out and he got to step in. Fast forward a year and he beat the seemingly unbeatable. Pretty impressive for a nobody. Don't think a lot of people had SPCDRI pegged down for producing the quality of debates he's produced either.
TLK: Fuck that TURNCOAT.
Seabs: Perfect Poster and SPCDRI no-showing. Can't think of anyone else who has no-showed who we miss. i$e having a busy life is more of a selfish disappointment than a letdown.
Seabs: Anark. Dude was a decent debater at the start and now he's one of the best who can hang with anyone. CGS and Aid180 deserve an honest mention for this one too but Anark's gone on to that next level by getting to the top.
TLK: Agreed. When he's not busy causing a scene for no good reason he's definitely one of the best.
Someone you wish would join who hasn't?
Seabs: Honestly I don't visit the Wrestling section so I wouldn't know who's a "good" poster. I really wish Joel would sign up because he's pretty smart and could debate US as well as UK sports but he won't
Also obligatory i$e and Aussie mentions.
TLK: Aussie pls.
What's your personal fondest memory of the current TDL incarnation?
Seabs: From a selfish standpoint beating you and ZOMBO in the first tag debate. The Captain Wars idea really taking off was great too.
TLK: On the contrary, those would both fall at the bottom of my fondest memories list.
Without spoiling too much, do you have anything BIG planned post-annual show?
Seabs: Not really. The last handful of shows have all been pretty big so the next few will probably be less supercard esque and give the Dojo guys more spots on the cards until the next supercard. Time to get back to the old format of a big supercard every 5 or so shows. With the champions and contenders we have though there'll always be at least one big debate per card.
TLK: GIVE KLUNDERBUNKER A CHANCE.
Will TLK ever be a team captain again?
Seabs: I want the next Captain Wars to be competitive. Take that as you will.
Now for more personal questions. You have your first title shot against current teammate SI. Have things remained amicable between you two? Is this a face vs face battle?
Seabs: Never met him so I guess it's a traditional keyboard vs keyboard battle.
After Wrking alongsyde him how confedent are You giong up againt him? Has Tagging wiht him helps you prepare?
TLK: Fuckin' CGS. YOU'RE FIREDDDD
What I meant was: After working alongside him, how confident are you going up against him? Has tagging with him helped you prepare?
Seabs: Lol I'm not Anark. I've already seen his debate along with your judging so I don't want to give anything away on that front. Both of us can do better though, one more so than the other so I'm looking forward to a potential rematch somewhere down the line regardless of who wins this time where hopefully we both bring it a bit harder.
TLK: Well, the match certainly wasn't up to the usual championship standard we've grown accustomed to in the Wrestling Division, but I look forward to the results nonetheless.
Speaking of the result, with zombo still deserving of a rematch, are we looking at a triple threat if you win?
Seabs: May as well give you the scoop! If I win then I'll just give ZOMBO and SI both their rematches at once rather than wasting two shows to have to dispose of them. If I lose then I'll bow out of title contention and ZOMBO will get his rematch one on one with SI.
TLK: Potential GOAT triple threat.
What's next for Seabs if you lose? Would you consider changing divisions?
Seabs: Nah Wrestling is my home. I'm happy doing fitba debates every now and again but I don't really want to do Sports full time and have no interest in debating the Social topics unless it's something really specific that I want to debate.
TLK: Despite using it as if I knew what I was talking about in the judging for a past debate, I still have no clue what fitba means.
Who would you like to face who you haven't?
Seabs: Andre which will happen SOON. I should probably face you while you're on a lull too
And LULL?! I lost to ZOMBO and the Rose Bros. Not exactly anything to beat myself up over. At the same time, I defeated the likes of Anark and Mac so I feel I'm still a force to be reckoned with. It's only a matter of time before I reclaim MY title.
Seabs: Not if I have anything to say about it.
Thanks for your time, Seabs. Best of luck on your title match result!
THAT'S A WRAP. TLK OUT.

Re: TOE TO TOE WITH TLK: FEATURING THE MOTHERFUCKIN' COMMISH
Well that was a really great read. I loved the bit where Seabs praised the 'non-stars' and big improvers, because really without those guys TDL would be a bit crap and top heavy, while the lack of pressure from underneath would cause the likes of myself and TLK to rest on our laurels far too much. at the Klunderblunker shout out too. Really, anyone who puts in any time and effort in order to make this a fun and well rounded experience is a 'star' in my eyes. TDL has been fuckern phenomenal over the past year and has been easily established as the best part of the forum, so well done to everyone who made it what it is and thanks to Seabs for being so gracious by offering credit to everyone who has got stuck in so far, despite the fact that he has been the driving force behind this whole operation
