Default Is there any proof that the company would of went under if WM1 failed?

I constantly hear this being said by wwe employees even on shoot interviews old school wrestlers have said it would of but I ask why??

-if u remember on the rise and fall of wcw they state that them paying Vince 1million dollars to get off the tbs station pretty much payed for wm1.. So it couldn't of been a money issue seeing how they were funded

-at that time they were running garden shows constantly no it wasn't as big as wm at the time but how would this event failing at the garden have shut the company down??

-the celebrities at the event was a big deal so could it have been the fact that them having out side media on the show nd it not being a success would deem them as a failure?

I'm not sure if this was ever discussed here so I think this should be interesting

I think if WrestleMania wasn't successful the WWE never would of broken that glass ceiling and truly gone national. I'm not THAT educated on the time period but I think WrestleMania saw wrestling itself go from small territories into the entertainment field.

If it had failed, wrestling would of always have been a small regional thing that nobody took seriously.

Vince McMahon, Hulk Hogan, Pat Patterson have all claimed this during itnerviews. How much more proof do you need?

Hogan and Pat Patterson aren't the most credible of sources

So I take it any time Hogan tells that story about Iron Sheik being offered 100.000 to break his leg should also be taken with a grain of salt, despite The Iron Sheik and otehrs claiming it too???

Why would the lie about this? Especially since Vince supported their calims. Sure Hogan may exaggerate and lie at times in order to put himself in a better ligth, but many wrestlers do.

But lets assume they lie, whom do you suggest have enought credibility to be believed that was directly involved in this and knew the backstage workings if not Hogan, Patterson and McMahon?

I believe Vince when he says they put it all on the line for wm....countless interviews he talks about having all available funds put into wrestlemania.....but, to take a line from Vince, he didn't just take a risk..oh no..he took a calculated risk! It was a gamble, but he had the aces already.

Would the company have gone under? Maybe...it's hard to pay talent when there isn't any money..

Well let's just say it is human nature to embellish a situation. I have to agree with the OP that I have always been very suspicious about this claim. They may not be telling lie's the company may have been dealt a serious blow, but we all tend to remember the past more elaborately than it may have happened.

Remember the entire wrestling industry was built around untruths and performance, many times the lines are blurred when the cameras are on.

Just like "if they had gone bust wrestling would have always been territorial" which I also do not believe. Cable television was every bit as responsible as any wrestler, promoter, or event for the spread of wrestling.

If they lost money on the event and had no capital afterwards, they would have been in a worse situation then people believe TNA is in now.
They would have been working paycheck to paycheck. Show to show.
The money they got from the Crockett/Turner deal would have already been spent. All the big name wrestlers they had congregated would have dispersed into other promotions.
In the end, no money, huge bills, no drawing talent, and no fanbase turns them into AWA circa 1990.

Again why would it have gone down??ur just saying the same thing over no one has yet to say what damage this would of done to the company.. It could not have been them losing money because they received 1 million dollars from the NWA to get off tbs which funded wrestlemania
