Wade Keller did a small article recently on Billy Gunn saying that he was supposed to be the guy who ran Steve Austin over and it was meant to lead to a main event run for him. However, Gunn was an asshole and a bully to all backstage staff and had a few other issues and Vince changed his mind on him.

For some reason I don't believe the bullying part because Billy comes across as a very chill guy, but we do know from his shoot interviews that he was fucked up constantly backstage and in the ring. Road Dogg and him had immense drug problems and it's kind of surprising how long Billy managed to stick around in the company considering Road Dogg got fired in 2001 due to his problems. You don't want to give such an unprofessional guy a main event run. I always loved his in ring work though, he's underrated in that regard.

The only place I've heard these rumours though were from shoot interviews with Mabel himself.

Rumours I've heard are (I'll try not to repeat):
Bob Holly was supposed to have a lengthy Intercontinental title run in 1995.

Eddie Guerrero was going to defeat Batista for the World Heavyweight title before his untimely death.

Curt Hennig was slatted for a Heavyweight title run in late 1991 or early 1992 before his back injury.

Bam Bam Bigelow & Tatanka were going to win the WWF Tag Team titles at the 1995 Royal Rumble, but the finish was changed to the Kid & Bob Holly because nobody saw it coming.

Tatanka was going to win the Intercontinental title at Wrestlemania 9, but Shawn cried & got the finish changed.

Shane Douglas was supposed to defeat Michaels for the Intercontinental title at the In Your Hosue PPV in October 1995, but Shawn ran his mouth & got his ass kicked by some (I think) Marines.
Then Hall talked Vince into having him defeat Douglas the same night.

Adam Bomb was supposed to win the Intercontinental title in 1994, but Hall complained & no title for Adam Bomb.

Power & Glory were originally scheduled to win the WWF tag team titles from the Hart Foundation at Wrestlemania 7. However, Hogan pulled some strings & had his buddies, the Nasty Boys win them instead.

Hogan & Brutus Beefcake were scheduled to win the WWF tag team titles from Money Incorporated at Wrestlemania 9, but Hogan changed the finish because he felt that he was too big of a name to hold the tag team titles.
(Couldn't do a favour for his best friend, the Barber?)

The "Mr. Perfect" gimmick almost went to Terry "Red Rooster" Taylor

The original plan for Wrestlemania 6 was Hulk Hogan vs. Zeus, but Zeus had such a poor reaction from the fans the year before, that Vince scrapped the idea.

Hulk Hogan vs. Ric Flair was the original main event for Wrestlemania 8, but their house show matches were lackluster & Hogan felt that his opponent should be someone who was physically larger than him.

The Brawl for All tournament was designed for "Dr. Death" Steve Williams to win. The idea was that the main event for Wrestlemania 15 would have been "Stone Cold" vs. "Dr. Death".

The original plan for the summer of 1993 was: Hulk Hogan vs. Bret Hart for the WWF title, where Hogan would put Bret over. And leading into the fall of 1993 Bret & Hennig would have continued their feud, only this time for the WWF Heavyweight title.
You know I always wondered what Flair/Hogan at WM would have been like at that time. Who gives a shit if they didn't "mesh" well at house shows (probably due to politics, both men felt they were the best in the business), I'm pretty damn sure if built well Flair/Hogan would have been a huge deal. It's a shame really.

I got more:

Back when Raven was in WCW, he did an angle where he was basically depressed and shot several vignettes at his house with "Jim/Hak" and Chastity (who I believe was acknowledged as his sister). In one of the vignettes, Raven began going through his collectibles and upon finding it, put a lot of focus on a picture of Roddy Piper. According to Raven in a shoot interview, it was suppose to lead to an angle with Piper, due to their connection to Oregon, with the plot being that Raven looked up to Piper. For whatever reason, it never happened. This and other things led to Raven leaving WCW that summer.

During Shawn Michaels suspension in 1993, WWF ran commercials for their hotline, urging fans to call and vote on whether or not Shawn should be reinstated. Problem was, at the time of the advertising for the hotline, Michaels had already returned and began working house shows.

Supposedly, Scott Steiner refused a singles push in WCW in 91 because he felt it would have saw his brother Rick turn into a comedy character and eventually get fired.

Hulk Hogan wanted to bring Yokozuna to WCW to avenge his KOTR '93 loss to him.

After Brock Lesnar defeated Hogan in 2002 via ref stoppage, HHH bitched to management about not doing that type of finish anymore.

In '95-'96, Kevin Sullivan (in his timeline shoot) said that Ric Flair would come to him often, listing wrestlers Hogan should job to. So, in a span of 3 weeks, Hogan jobbed to Flair and his best friend, Arn Anderson, just to shut Flair up.

Flair was supposed to retain the WWF Championship at WrestleMania VIII, but Savage had the title change happen.

Flair was supposed to win the WCW Championship from Hogan in 1994, but Hogan wanted to hold the title longer

Warrior Vs. Sid at WrestleMania VIII for the WWF Championship if Warrior hadn't gotten himself fired.

Credit: Sid's shoot interview

The Rockers' tag title win that got ignored because the ropes broke and the match was bad.

The Ultimate Warrior winning the WWF Championship at SummerSlam 1992, but didn't because he refused to turn heel.

The Nasty Boys Vs. Money Inc. at WrestleMania 9, but Hogan had that changed. Brian Knobs was PISSED!

The Rock winning the WWF Championship at WrestleMania 16, but Austin was too injured to do the run-in so it was saved for Backlash instead.

Booker T Vs. Hulk Hogan at Halloween Havoc 2000 for the Undisputed WCW Championship had the Vince Russo BATB 200 Shoot gone as planned.

Helmsley winning the Undisputed Championship at WrestleMania 18 from Austin, who refused to job to him.

Booker T winning the World Heavyweight Title at WrestleMania 19, but Goldberg getting signed scrapped that.

Rob Van Dam winning the World Heavyweight Title at Unforgiven 2002.

Brock Lesnar Vs. That One Guy at WrestleMania 19 for the WWE Championship if Kurt Angle couldn't work the show.

Billy Gunn winning the U.S. Title tournament in 2003.

Muhammad Hassan winning the World Heavyweight Title from Batista at SummerSlam 2005.

Randy Orton winning the World Heavyweight Title at WrestleMania 22, but he got himself into trouble so it didn't happen.

Rey Mysterio was supposed to drop the World Heavyweight Title to Orton, Layfield, and Henry in 2006, but Orton got suspended and the other two were injured so Booker T got his much deserved final title win after three years of waiting!

Rob Van Dam or CM Punk winning the ECW Championship at December To Dismember.

Dolph Ziggler winning the Intercontinental Title in 2009, but Rey Mysterio wanted to hold the title longer.

Drew McIntyre winning Money In The Bank at WrestleMania 26.
